Hi, I’m Katie! I’m a certified special education teacher with over eight years of experience working with elementary students—and I truly love what I do. I graduated from Sam Houston State University with a degree in Interdisciplinary Studies EC (early childhood, Pre-K) - 6 with a minor in Special Education EC (early childhood, Pre-k) - 12th grade. Upon graduating with my bachelor's degree, I also went to The University of Texas Permian Basin to receive my masters in Special Education with an emphasis in autism and developmental disabilities. I have certifications in English as a Second Language EC (Pre-K) - 12th grade, Core content for EC (Pre-K) to 6th grade, Special Education EC (Pre-K) - 12th grade, and I have received certificate Texas Science of Teaching Reading (STR) through the Texas Reading Academy.

Throughout my years teaching, I was able to become certified for teaching dyslexia through Orton Gillingham. Orton Gillingham is a multisensory approach to teaching reading which has been and it has become my favorite aspect of teaching. I have taught students dyslexia both in person and online, especially during COVID. When all students returned back to campus from COVID, I tutored students in math and utilized the Orton Gillingham strategies for reading in accordance to the state assessment, STAAR.

My passion is helping kids with learning differences feel confident, capable, and excited about learning. I love it when students can have their "aha" moments! They come out at different times, but those are the moments that the student(s) take with them. I design each lesson tailored to fit the induvial child's need since everyone learns different whether we're building on reading fluency, tackling writing challenges, or strengthening foundational math skills. Every child deserves to feel seen and supported, and I design lessons that meet them exactly where they are.

Students with ADHD sometimes struggle, but with the right interventions, they are able to be successful and focus on one task at a time.

STAAR

STAAR

I began teaching elementary school students in 2018. Students in 3 to 5 took STAAR in English language arts, math, and science (for fifth grade only). I not only provided instruction for students on a daily basis, but I gave a mini boot camp to prepare them, and I administered the assessment. STAAR changed its layout to embed writing throughout all content areas which I have adjusted. Students have been able to be successful regardless of whether or not they have disabilities.
