I have an unusual background.
I grew up in a completely assimilated household in which there was no religion. I was troubled by this void in my life and so I started studying the religion of my ancestors. Later I've discovered there are many people who also have a void in their life and they're searching for a spiritual meaning in their life. My background has enabled me to become a better teacher because I understand the situation of many of my students.
After I graduated from the University of California law school in San Francisco and passed the California bar, I realized I didn't want to be an attorney. Therefore, I decided to go to rabbinical school.
As a rabbi for the past forty years I've taught thousands of students of all ages and many backgrounds. I have taught in many settings, including synagogues and churches as well as colleges. Since many of my students have a limited interest in religious studies, I had to become a dynamic and creative teacher in order to gain their attention. If my students are not engaged in what I'm teaching, I failed as a teacher.
My classes are based upon over forty years of studying. I'm constantly updating my courses based upon books I've read and lectures I've attended. Also I encourage honest feedback from my students.
Often I provide my students with my written lectures so my students in class can focus on speaking and not focus on taking notes. This encourages my students to participate in thought-provoking discussions. I want my students to think and not just memorize. And I definitely want my students to challenge my viewpoints. My goal is to have my classes resemble a law school class.
And finally, I pride myself to be a very patient teacher. I began my academic career as a very average student. Due to the efforts of some outstanding teachers, I excelled in my academic work. I want to do the same for my students.
