About Stu

Physics and mathematics are subjects which can challenge even the brightest of students. You may need help understanding your current class, reviewing what you have forgotten from a prior class, or preparing for an upcoming AP test. I will tailor my instruction to meet your needs.

I will explain the physical and mathematical concepts and guide you through a variety of practice problems. I believe the real learning occurs when you are solving the problems.

I hold a Ph.D. in Aeronautical and Astronautical Engineering from the University of Washington, and I have nearly 40 years' experience working in the physical sciences in the private sector. I have used my knowledge of physics and mathematics to model and build high power gasdynamic lasers, to model and test hydraulic borehole mining systems, to study Arctic sea ice mechanics, and to analyze the potential energy savings of emerging energy efficient technologies. And I have tutored physics, mathematics, chemistry, and English to three students who later graduated as high school valedictorians.

Whether you are a college or high school student, I would like to help you to succeed.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Algebra 1

I am highly qualified to tutor Algebra 1, with a PhD in Aeronautical and Astronautical Engineering from the University of Washington and more than 40 years of project experience in science and engineering. The coursework for my Ph.D. included an extensive amount of mathematics, including calculus with analytic geometry, ordinary differential equations, matrix methods (linear algebra), and calculus in two dimensions. Also, I have tutored physics, mathematics, chemistry, and English to three students who later graduated as high school valedictorians.

Algebra 2

I am highly qualified to tutor Algebra 2, and currently tutor mathematics from Algebra 1 through Calculus. Previously, I tutored physics, mathematics, chemistry, and English to three students who later graduated as high school valedictorians. I hold a PhD in Aeronautical and Astronautical Engineering from the University of Washington, and the coursework for my Ph.D. included an extensive amount of mathematics. Also, I have used mathematics throughout my career in science and engineering.

Calculus

I have used calculus throughout my career to develop numerical models of high power gasdynamic lasers, hydraulic borehole mining systems, Arctic sea ice mechanics, ferrofluids, and energy efficient technologies. Also, I have tutored physics, mathematics, chemistry, and English to three students who later graduated as high school valedictorians.

Chemistry

I am highly qualified to tutor chemistry, with a PhD in Aeronautical and Astronautical Engineering from the University of Washington and more than 40 years of project experience in science and engineering. I have used my knowledge of chemistry to model trace elements in coal-fired and gas-fired power plants, to analyze combustion processes in energy efficient technologies, and to model the reactions in gasdynamic lasers.

Geometry

I am uniquely qualified to tutor geometry, with a PhD in Aeronautical and Astronautical Engineering from the University of Washington and more than 40 years of project experience in science and engineering. The coursework for my Ph.D. included an extensive amount of mathematics, including calculus with analytic geometry, ordinary differential equations, matrix methods (linear algebra), calculus in two dimensions, advanced engineering mathematics, partial differential equations including Fourier series and boundary value problems, and advanced numerical methods for solving partial differential equations. In addition, I have used geometry throughout my career to develop numerical models of high power gasdynamic lasers, hydraulic borehole mining systems, Arctic sea ice mechanics, ferrofluids, and energy efficient technologies. Also, I have tutored physics, mathematics, chemistry, and English to three students who later graduated as high school valedictorians.

Microsoft Excel

I have been using Microsoft Excel since it was first released in the early 1980's. I have used it for engineering analysis and modeling, financial calculations such as income taxes and return of investment, and databases for record keeping. I have built several mathematical models using 8,760 hourly timesteps with various numerical integration schemes. I have also set up dropdown menus, pivot tables, macros, and all kinds of functions, formulas, charts, and printing layouts.

Physics

I am uniquely qualified to tutor physics, with a PhD in Aeronautical and Astronautical Engineering from the University of Washington and more than 40 years of project experience in science and engineering. My GPA in graduate school was a perfect 4.0 (prior to decimal grades). I have used my knowledge of physics to model and build high power gasdynamic lasers, to model and test hydraulic borehole mining systems, to study Arctic sea ice mechanics, and to analyze the potential energy savings of emerging energy efficient technologies.

Precalculus

I am uniquely qualified to tutor precalculus, with a PhD in Aeronautical and Astronautical Engineering from the University of Washington and more than 40 years of project experience in science and engineering.

SAT Math

I am highly qualified to tutor SAT Math, and I am currently tutoring math at levels ranging from Algebra 1 through Calculus. I recently scored over 2300 out of 2400 on a full SAT test. I hold a PhD in Aeronautical and Astronautical Engineering from the University of Washington, and I have more than 40 years of project experience in science and engineering.

Trigonometry

I am uniquely qualified to tutor trigonometry, with a PhD in Aeronautical and Astronautical Engineering from the University of Washington and more than 40 years of project experience in science and engineering. The coursework for my Ph.D. included an extensive amount of mathematics, including calculus with analytic geometry, ordinary differential equations, matrix methods (linear algebra), calculus in two dimensions, advanced engineering mathematics, partial differential equations, etc. In addition, I have used algebra, trigonometry, geometry, differential calculus, and integral calculus throughout my career to develop numerical models of high power gasdynamic lasers, hydraulic borehole mining systems, Arctic sea ice mechanics, ferrofluids, and energy efficient technologies. Also, I have tutored physics, mathematics, chemistry, and English to three students who later graduated as high school valedictorians.
