I'm Jared! Having earned a BA in Spanish Education, and an Ed.M. in Literacy, I have been teaching in an 8th grade, bilingual classroom for 9 years. My focus on reading has helped me teach Spanish and English language arts, as well as US History to bilingual students from English speaking and/or Spanish speaking homes.

Over these past nine years of teaching, I've learned that the most learning happens when I tap into a student's interests and use that to help them understand concepts. So, I get to know my students first, which enables me to plan my teaching for how they learn. Then, I activate what students already know, and use that to connect their knowledge to new learning; which allows students to feel more successful and sets a positive tone for the rest of the lesson and unit of study. I provide students models for what they will do, they will practice with guidance, then they will have opportunities to practice on their own. Each step is a form of assessment, where I can tweak the next step according to the student's needs. I've learned to use visuals throughout my lessons, this helps those with processing disorders like dyslexia, and it helps kids who are developing language skills at any level (K-12+). I do this daily with Reading, Writing, Listening, and Speaking in Spanish and English.

I have four kids of my own, ages ranging from three to ten! I've loved reading to them and seeing them blossom and develop their own book preferences. I have experience substitute teaching in high school as well; which is to say - I've worked with all age ranges of kids! I am always learning, and love any suggestions, information, or materials students and parents provide me. I am hyper-vigilant with communication and will always reply quickly; feel free to contact me with questions - or to schedule a session!

Reading

I have been helping beginning readers from Spanish speaking countries to improve their reading fluency for 9 years. I am passionate about reading, and am committed to making reading an engaging activity for developing readers. Fluency and comprehension are the focus of my lessons; improving vocabulary through carefully designed quiz games that are fun and focused, is a great way to improve both comprehension and fluency!

Over the years, as a teacher, I have had the opportunity to help hundreds of different students improve their writing skills.
