About Andrew

Bio

I am a recently retired high school math and science teacher who does a little tutoring because I miss teaching. I prefer to help students tackle challenging courses such as Honors, AP, and IB courses. I love tutoring Physics, Chemistry, Calculus, Precalculus, and Geometry.

I prefer to meet students in public spaces, such as libraries or coffee shops.

I prefer to meet students in public spaces, such as libraries or coffee shops.

I have been teaching and tutoring high school math and science for more than fifteen years. I taught 15 years at a private school, where all of my teaching was done in one-on-one sessions. This allowed me to individualize the instruction and to adapt to the learning styles and needs of each student. During the summers, I taught Geometry at a summer camp.

I have a BS in Chemistry from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, a year of graduate work at Carnegie-Mellon University, and a teaching credential from Seattle University.

Approved Subjects

Calculus

Calculus

Have taught and tutored AB and BC calculus for more than ten years.
Chemistry

Chemistry

I have a B.S. in Chemistry from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and have taught high school chemistry for 15 years.
Geometry

Geometry

I love teaching Geometry. I teach Geometry as if it were a science class, since Geometry is the science of space. We do experiments and look for patterns. (This is the inductive part of science.) Once we find a pattern, we explore it a bit, seeing if it always works. Can we find any exceptions to our pattern? If we can't find any exceptions, then we have pretty good evidence that it is "true," but this isn't proof. For proof, we need to find an explanation, using logic. (This is the deductive part of science.) I make heavy use of the computer program Geometers Sketchpad for carrying out our experiments during tutoring sessions. During the summers, I have taught a course on Geometry Through Art at a summer camp for gifted middle schoolers. We learn about perspective drawing, symmetry, tesselations, and fractals.
Physics

Physics

I've taught high school physis for the past 15 years.

Great Tutor

Andy has been a fantastic tutor for our daughter in every way. She says that he makes subjects that she does not understand from class lectures seem easy to understand in a fraction of the time they spend on it in class. He is easy to reach, responsive, and makes scheduling appointments easy, and has been very helpful if an appointment is needed on short notice before a test.

Very helpful!

This is the first time my son has used a tutor, and he wasn't sure what to expect. But, after his meeting with Andrew, he seemed more at ease about the process. Andrew was on time and kind. Also, according to my son, Andrew was able to provide a lot of helpful tools to help prep him for his upcoming test. We look forward for working with him in the future!

Best Investment - Genius decision having Andrew as a tutor

Subject was IB HL Math. There were many missed school days due to sports activities leading to a panic about not understanding the material. Andrew proved to have a mastery on the subject on short notice, adept at explaining everything, and a calm presentation that was confidence building. Andrew is easy to talk to and gets the job done amazingly efficiently. He seems to love math which makes the sessions enjoyable. I couldn't have foreseen such a positive experience. Don't delay, call Andrew.

My son just needs that extra help and Andrew is the best tutor for him

I love the fact that Andrew can help my son in so many subjects. Andrew understands my son and can tutor him so he can feel confident and enjoys going to his tutor lesson. Andrew takes the time and explains so he understands the material and when my son leaves the lesson he can take what he learned and do it on his own. We like to set up a tutor session just before a big test and Andrew always works him into his schedule. Andrew is a very competent and trustworthy person. Thanks for all you do for my son.

Great Tutor

He answered all the questions I had very clearly and did not mind repeating his explanations whenever they were needed.

Willing and able Tutor

My son, a high school junior, began taking running start classes during the fall quarter. He struggled with college level calculus and asked for tutor assistance. Wyzant presented us with several possible tutors from which to choose. We settled on Andrew. Andrew was very patient and capable, and soon had my son on track with restored confidence. As the quarter is nearing an end, my son is currently holding an "A" in the class, and looks forward to taking additional advanced level math classes. Thank you, Andrew, for you assistance!

Patient and Respectful

We saw Andrew only once. He did a great job with explaining details. Andrew is patient and respectful to the student. My son was satisfied and felt more confident.

Good fit!

Andrew was very good at explaining concepts in a way that my daughter could understand and apply to her calculus test prep. He helped her raise a half grade in a short time!

Andrew is very patient and kind

Andrew is thoughtful and very helpful. He came to the session yesterday with new ideas on how I might learn better. He is patient and quick to say something in a different way if I dont understand the first time. He is always on time, and we make very good use of our 60 minute sessions.
