About Michaelle

I have been teaching special education for the past 21 years and have been tutoring for the last five years. My students have been very successful, and I can provide references upon request. Traditionally the students I work with require assistance with organization, time management and homework assistance. I am highly qualified in reading, basic math, written language and study skills. Currently I am teaching at the high school level although I tutor students from elementary to community college levels.

I am highly versed in phonics, whole language, and have a variety of methods to enhance reading fluency and comprehension skills. My Masters degree is in Literacy for special needs students and am very comfortable with students at all levels of literacy.

Basic and general math at the high school is what I have been teaching for the past 10 years as well as tutoring the same for community college students.

Last year I tutored a student in AP World History, this coming year we will be working on AP English.

Thank you for your time in reading this and if you believe I can help please feel free to contact me. I do teach full time during the school year and have three returning students so my calendar does fill quickly. I am happy to tutor your student during summer if they are interested in getting a head start on the school year.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Dyslexia

I have my Masters in Special Needs Literacy from Seattle University. I have been teaching reading for the past 20 years and am very familiar with a variety of strategies in working with dyslexia. I continue to take classes in working with all reading disabilities and so am up to date on current strategies and methodology in helping students work around their disabilities.

Elementary (K-6th)

I am certificated to teach K-8 general education in the state of Washington. I have tutored children in 3rd grade, 5th grade and 6th grade successfully. This past year I tutored a young man in 5th grade in social studies and his sister in math. Most of the work I have done with younger students involves organization skills, study skills as well as working on skills and improving deficit areas.

Elementary Math

I have a minor in math from Seattle University, as well as teach basic and general math to special education students at the high school level.

English

I have been teaching English for the past 20 + years in the Everett School District. I have worked successfully with students from grade 3 up to college level and truly enjoy seeing my students understand and move forward in their studies.

ESL/ESOL

I have been a public high school teacher for 24 years and have worked with ESL programs and students a number of times with success in improving their communication skills.

Reading

I have a Master's Degree in Special Needs Literacy as well as my Reading Specialist Endorsement from Seattle University.

Social Studies

I have taught social studies in the state of Washington, as well as tutoring students in social studies with success. I am quite proficient in creating ways to assist students in learning and retaining information. I have successfully used strategies such as graphic organizers, if then scenarios and Cornell Notes.

Special Needs

I am certificated to teach K-12 special education in the state of WA. I have been teaching special education and working with special needs population for the past 20 years. Once I know my student I can tailor my tutoring strategies to their individual needs.

Study Skills

I have taught study skills at the high school level in the special education field and have tutored incorporating study skills successfully. Once I determine with the student their individual learning style, I can tailor the study skills sessions to best work for the student. Be it organizational, time management, or planning long term projects backward, each student will have a toolbox of strategies to assist them in their studies at home and school.

Writing

I am experienced in helping students learn to self-edit, create active sentences as opposed to passive and create and use graphic organizers to assist with writing. I also have experience in assisting students who have organizational difficulties in learning to use rubrics to their advantage.
