Hello, I’m Xeni—pronounced “ks-enny,” like “penny.” I am a Harvard Ph.D. and former Harvard Teaching Fellow specializing in selective college and graduate admissions essays, developmental editing, advanced academic writing, and literary analysis.

With over 20 years of mentoring experience, I have a proven track record of guiding students to success. Students I have advised have earned admission to highly selective institutions, including Harvard, the University of Chicago, Johns Hopkins, Brown, Georgetown, UC Berkeley, UCLA, USC, the University of Washington, Carnegie Mellon, Wellesley, Grinnell, Hamilton, and Colgate.

I hold a B.A. in English Language and Literature from the University of Chicago and a Ph.D. in Comparative Literature from Harvard University, where I received a Derek Bok Center Award for Excellence in Teaching. Across classroom, independent, and homeschooling settings, I have taught and mentored hundreds of students from middle school through college.

My approach is thoughtful, rigorous, and highly individualized. I help students recognize what is not yet working in their writing and make the structural, analytical, and stylistic decisions needed to strengthen it. Depending on the student and assignment, we may clarify the central idea, develop missing material, reorganize an argument, or refine the language for greater precision, originality, and persuasive force.

I work both live and asynchronously. Students may meet with me for one-on-one instruction or submit drafts for detailed developmental editing and written feedback. My asynchronous work focuses not only on correcting problems, but on helping students understand the reasoning behind revisions so they can apply those principles independently.

My goal is to produce stronger immediate work while cultivating sharper thinking, greater confidence, and lasting independence as a writer.

Approved Subjects

College Counseling

College Counseling

I help students approach the college application process with clarity, strategy, and a strong sense of who they are. My counseling includes college-list development, high school course and extracurricular planning, application strategy, and personal, compelling essays that remain unmistakably the student’s own. I tailor my guidance to each student’s interests, strengths, and goals rather than imposing a one-size-fits-all admissions formula. Students I have advised have earned admission to highly selective universities, liberal arts colleges, and specialized programs in fields ranging from computer science to music.
English

English

I have a PhD in Comparative Literature from Harvard. My area of concentration is American and European Modernism. I've taught students from middle school to college and am well-versed in the standards and expectations of middle school, high school, and college English. Students who are a good fit are honors and AP students seeking to improve their course performance. I also have over twenty years of experience homeschooling, and I consult with homeschool parents on homeschooling humanities and preparing students for selective college admissions.
Essay Writing

Essay Writing

I help students turn promising ideas into clear, well-structured essays with purposeful theses, persuasive evidence, and genuine analytical depth. Rather than simply correcting a draft, I teach students how to understand an assignment, develop an argument, organize their thinking, and revise with intention. I work with students from middle school through college, providing the particular instruction each writer needs at that stage. The result is not only a stronger paper, but a more confident and independent writer.

Personal Statements

Personal Statements

I guide students through every stage of crafting a personal statement, from uncovering the right story to shaping and refining the final draft. Drawing on my background in teaching writing and literature at the university level, I help students create essays that are emotionally resonant and strategically effective. My students have earned admission to highly selective universities, liberal arts colleges, specialized degree programs, and competitive summer programs.

So thankful for her help!

She is a wonderful tutor—responsible, patient, and always willing to help, even with last-minute requests. She supported the college essay process with care and insight, bringing clarity and smooth flow to their writing. Her guidance made the experience far less stressful and truly elevated the quality of the essays.

So thoughtful and patient and great ideas. She knows how to motivate a student. A rare gift. We will keep on working with her for written work, even for another eye.

Excellent Proofreader and Writing Coach

Xeni has been an incredible help throughout the process of refining my law school application essays. She worked extensively on my Yale and Harvard Law School statements, and her feedback went far beyond basic proofreading. She helped strengthen the clarity, structure, storytelling, persuasiveness, and overall positioning of each essay while still making sure my voice and experiences remained at the center of the writing. I especially appreciate how thoughtful and thorough she is with revisions. She has a great ability to identify where an essay can be stronger and make suggestions that improve the writing without changing what I am trying to communicate. After multiple rounds of revisions, I feel much more confident in the quality of my essays and how they represent me as an applicant. Xeni is professional, detail-oriented, and clearly invested in producing high-quality work. I would highly recommend her to anyone looking for help with personal statements, graduate or law school applications, or other important writing projects.

Knowledgeable, Patient, and Supportive Tutor

I was initially drawn to Xeni’s educational background in her Wyzant bio: holds a B.A. in English from the University of Chicago and a PhD in Comparative Literature from Harvard. Her hourly rate seemed extremely reasonable given her impressive academic background and extensive experience working with students. So I scheduled my first session, and I couldn’t be happier that I did! Xeni transforms my work in the best way possible. She never rushes and takes as much time as needed, but she still makes edits quickly and produces high-quality work. She’s thoughtful throughout the entire process – she always makes sure I’m happy with the writing, asks for my feedback, checks in with me, and clarifies things as needed. Xeni highlights the best aspects of my writing and makes it more concise and articulate. She is also extremely pleasant to work with – consistently kind, supportive, punctual, efficient, and professional. In just two sessions with Xeni, we edited three letters of recommendation (for my university students applying to graduate programs), and we also wrote/edited my own letter of intent email for dental programs. I could not be more pleased with Xeni’s services, and I cannot recommend her writing/editing services enough. I plan on scheduling more sessions with Xeni. Thank you for everything!!!

BEST TUTOR EVER!!!

Xeni is brilliant!! I have had many writing tutors in the past but Xeni and I really clicked. She is incredibly patient and explains things in a way that is easy to understand. I had one online lesson with her and one offline; in both of them she was really helpful and gave me the guidance that I needed. I was a little nervous that I wasn't going to learn as much in the offline lesson, but she gave me a ton of feedback that was very understandable. She is so sweet and it is very clear that she genuinely cares about her tutees and wants to help them learn and succeed. I literally can't sing her praises enough. I definitely recommend!!
