I’m a 1400-rated chess player, professional Software Engineer III, and computer science graduate who enjoys breaking complicated ideas into clear, approachable steps. I’m especially interested in helping beginner chess players develop strong fundamentals, but I also tutor computer programming, computer science, and related technical subjects.
For chess, I work primarily with beginners and developing players. I focus on practical skills such as piece development, king safety, tactics, checkmating patterns, opening principles, basic endgames, and recognizing common mistakes. Rather than asking students to memorize long sequences of moves, I want them to understand why moves work and gradually develop the ability to reason through positions themselves. Lessons can include guided games, tactical exercises, position analysis, and reviews of the student’s own games.
I hold a bachelor’s degree in Computer Science and work professionally as a Software Engineer III. I also have experience creating educational material, including computer science courses on Udemy and instructional content for YouTube. My technical background makes me particularly well suited to tutoring programming and computer science, including helping beginners learn programming fundamentals, problem solving, algorithms, debugging, and how to think through software problems systematically.
I can also provide instruction in introductory linear algebra and electrical/computing concepts where they overlap with my technical background. Although I’m new to formal one-on-one tutoring, I have experience explaining technical subjects to learners through educational content and in my professional work.
Whether we’re looking at a chess position or a programming problem, my teaching style is centered on understanding rather than memorization.
