I am a certified tutor (recently re-certified at Portland State) and have more than 10 years of experience tutoring students of all levels: kindergarten through graduate school. I have experience with a wide variety of learning styles and challenges, including disabilities, and I am more than happy to accommodate them.

I have been a home school teacher, where I taught middle school math and science. I have worked in a elementary school (K-7) while in Americorps. I have tutored college level material since 2003 (with a bit of a break during grad school). I have tutored preparation for the SAT and GRE, both in content and technique. I have experience with group and individual tutoring arrangements. I have run midterm/final exam prep sessions for a number of courses. I have had the opportunity to learn a variety of educational and study skill techniques that I will share in addition to our primary content.

I primarily tutor math and physics, but I have also tutored a variety of other topics.

Frequent Courses/topics/specializations:

Math: Algebra, Functions, Trigonometry, Precalculus, Calculus (all), Probability and Statistics, Linear Algebra, Proof writing, Ordinary Differential Equations, Partial Differential Equations, Dynamical systems, Analysis, Group Theory, and Geometry

Physics: Intro physics sequence (mechanics, thermodynamics, electricity, magnetism, optics, materials, etc.), Mechanics, Astronomy, E&M, Modern Physics, Quantum, and Relativity

Other: Intro Chemistry

Approved Subjects

ADHD

ADHD

I have been the go-to person for challenging student situations for both places I've tutored long term. I have had specific training in disability support both at Portland State and during my Americorps term. I have tutored a number of students with ADHD successfully, including a home-school student for about 9 months (December-August): we covered about 2 school years worth of middle school material (math and sciences), and he was able to enter high school that following September. I look forward to helping more students utilize the benefits, as well as overcome the hurdles, associated to ADHD.
C++

C++

I have now been programming with C++ and related languages for several years. I have helped a number of people develop their skills in C++, for coworkers wanting to develop advanced mathematics techniques to classmates trying to figure out how to format their code correctly.
Differential Equations

Differential Equations

I have previously tutored differential equations at Portland State University and privately. I have taken Advanced Calculus (semester), PDEs (semester), Advanced Differential Equations (semester), Mathematical Modeling (semester), Real Analysis (semester), Complex Analysis (semester), Control Theory (2/3 year, graduate level) Theory of ODEs (2/3 year, grad.), Differential Geometry (2/3 year, grad.), Lie Algebras (2/3 year, grad.) Advanced ODEs (full year, doctoral level), Advanced PDEs(full year, doctoral), Modern Analysis: Calculus of Variations (1/3 year, Doctoral) and done mathematical research in continuum mechanics, all of which cascade from the differential equations course. Additionally, I have taken a number of physics courses that utilize differential equations (Analytical Mechanics, E&M, Quantum, GR). My tutoring methods reflect the student and their previous understanding. I like to focus on understanding material rather than memorizing formulas.
Linear Algebra

Linear Algebra

I have previously tutored Linear Algebra at Portland State University and privately for many years. In addition to Linear Algebra, I have taken a number of subsequent courses both at the undergraduate and graduate levels. This gives me a wide range of insights and previous tutoring situations to draw from to help a Linear Algebra student.
Logic

Logic

I have a philosophy minor (Ethics) that included a Logic class. I am primarily a mathematician by training. From the perspective of philosophy, mathematics is "applied Logic" and so it is not unreasonable to suggest that I have a great deal of Logic background (proof writing in particular). When tutoring Logic I make a particular effort to discuss how the techniques are relevant to daily life, and how the fallacies are used in public discourse.
MATLAB

MATLAB

I started learning MATLAB in my Calculus classes. I don't really think of it as a skill anymore. It's a pervasively useful item on my desktop. Teaching MATLAB is basically a user friendly version of teaching any programming framework. There's syntax and data structure. But most important is the Help Menu! It works (unlike most programs) and provides insight, too. I find teaching MATLAB kind of like going to a playground. It's a lot of fun (results are easy to demonstrate) and there are a bunch of really neat toys (programs, etc.) already there for you and your student to play with.
Physics

Physics

I have been tutoring physics since 2003. I have a strong background in physics through both coursework and independent reading and research. I have helped dozens, if not hundreds, of students succeed in their physics courses.
Statistics

Statistics

I have been tutoring Statistics since I completed my Theory of Mathematical Statistics class as an undergraduate. As a (applied) mathematician I have been trained in advanced statistical theory (including measure theory).

Could Not Have Done It Without Him

David not only is a helpful math instructor, but he calms my anxiety about it too. My grade has gone up 10% in just 4 weeks! He shows up on time and is ready to hit the books immediately. I appreciate that. It shows respect for my time and money. Soon Algebra will be a distant memory, but because of David I will have finally finished my degree! He has made a life changing opportunity possible for me. Thank you.

patient and accommodating instructor

David was very helpful and patient as an instructor. He has an easygoing demeanor and made the lesson interesting and easy to comprehend. I am a complete beginner when it comes to astronomy and physics, and numbers and really needed someone to break up the concepts for ease of understanding. I will be seeking David's services in the future as well.

Great lesson.

I rated David as excellent. My daughter had a pressing matter and he called us right away, met her on a very snowy, cold day. He met her halfway between where each of us live. During the lesson he explained things well and went over things in a timely matter. David was very knowledgeable and personable.
