My students describe me as patient, good at explaining things, and knowledgeable.

I specialize in tutoring LSAT, SAT, and ACT, and I also regularly tutor math through Pre-Calculus. I help my students build solid skills so they can raise their test scores significantly. My LSAT students work hard and usually see 10+ point increases. While I work with students at all starting points, my SAT and ACT students are often shooting for high scores. I've helped many of them get perfect or close to perfect scores (and scholarships to match). I also help with the admissions process, including personal statement review.

I tutor all components of each test and have scored highly on all of them (177 LSAT, 1590 SAT, 36 on ACT practice tests). I also work with students on SSAT and ISEE for private school admissions and the CogAT for admissions to gifted programs. No two students are the same, so I customize each test prep session according to my student's needs, goals, and time available.

I also provide academic tutoring and homework support for math (from middle school up to trigonometry/Pre-Calculus). I tutor very interactively, customizing for each student's particular needs. I particularly enjoy helping students discover that they actually CAN be good at the subject that is challenging them, provided they work hard and ask lots of questions.

I have over 15 years of tutoring experience, was formally trained as a tutor, and even won a National Tutor of the Year award for my work with one education company. I graduated summa cum laude from the University of Washington with degrees in Linguistics and Psychology, and I have a master's degree in Second Language Studies from the University of Hawaii. My degree specializes in teaching English as a Second Language, which means I'm also comfortable with test prep for non-native English speakers.

GRE

GRE

I have over 10 years of experience teaching the GRE, which means significant experience on both the old and the new GRE. I've worked with students on Verbal, Quantitative, and the Writing assessment. My students have ranged from those who haven't done math in years to those who are shooting for a near perfect score. My own scores are a 170 Verbal and 169 Quantitative.

Elementary Education

Vocabulary

Vocabulary

Having tutored the SAT, ACT, and GRE, and having studied Linguistics, Latin, English, and a few other languages in college, I've acquired a sizable vocabulary. I have taught vocabulary to ESL students and to native English speakers who need a larger vocabulary for standardized tests like the GRE. I tutor vocabulary for standardized tests using roots, word groups, and sentence context. For non-native English speakers, I make sure that the vocabulary I teach is at the appropriate level and that I also teach how to use the words idiomatically. For younger children, I make sure to give age-appropriate context and to reinforce the words often.

English

ACT English,

ACT English

I have been tutoring the ACT for over 10 years. Although I tutor students in all subjects of the ACT, I especially love teaching ACT English. Many students are initially frustrated because it's been so long since they were taught grammar in school, but systematic review helps a lot! I teach my students the punctuation and grammar rules the ACT tests, how to check for wordiness, and how to tackle the tricky organization questions.
ACT Reading,

ACT Reading

I've tutored all subjects on the ACT for over 10 years. ACT Reading is about accuracy and speed. 4 passages and 40 questions is a lot to do in 35 minutes! I teach my students what they should be skimming for in the passages so that they don't waste valuable time on material that's not likely to get tested. I also cover strategies for attacking the questions and for avoiding common wrong answer traps.
SAT Reading,

SAT Reading

I have taught all subjects of the SAT for over 10 years and am knowledgeable about the changes to the SAT in 2016. For the reading section, I teach strategies for reading the passages themselves and for answering the questions. Finding support for the answers has been one of my emphases, even before the test changed to ask so explicitly about evidence. Following the changes to the SAT in 2016, I have changed my approach to vocabulary, focusing on the high-frequency academic vocabulary likely to be on the test, and always looking at it in context. My own SAT scores were 790 Math and 800 Verbal in 1999. My GRE scores (169 Quantitative and 170 Verbal, both out of 170) are much more recent, and reflect that I am still quite capable when it comes to standardized tests.
SAT Writing,

SAT Writing

I have taught all subjects of the SAT for over 15 years and am knowledgeable about the changes to the SAT in 2016. For just about as long, I have also taught ACT English, which is very similar to the writing section on the new SAT. I especially love teaching SAT writing/ACT English. Many students are initially frustrated because it's been so long since they were taught grammar in school, but systematic review helps a lot! I teach my students the punctuation and grammar rules the SAT tests, how to check for wordiness, and how to tackle the tricky organization questions. For the optional SAT essay, I make sure students are ready for whatever prompt they might receive and I target specifically what each student needs to improve. Algebra 1,

Algebra 1

I have 10+ years experience tutoring the material from Algebra I. I love helping students see the logic behind algebra, and I believe in repetition to build confidence. I can also help students prepare for any algebra end-of-course exam your state may require for high school graduation.
Algebra 2,

Algebra 2

I have 10+ years experience teaching the material from Algebra 2. I love breaking down difficult concepts into step by step processes that students can reliably execute. I can provide a refresher from Algebra 1 if necessary, or a bridge to pre-calculus if desired.
Geometry,

Geometry

I have tutored Geometry for over 10 years and enjoy teaching students how to make questions less intimidating. I help my students learn formulas and apply them in situations of increasing complexity. I can also help students prepare for any geometry end-of-course exam your state may require for high school graduation.
Prealgebra,

Prealgebra

I have 10+ years experience tutoring students in Prealgebra, and enjoy helping students see how math rules make sense. I believe in customizing my tutoring to what the student needs, which may include a math refresher to fill in some gaps that may exist. For other students, I have tutored Prealgebra as enrichment - to provide the students with a challenge beyond what they have been doing in school. I tutor patiently and kindly, using humor and plentiful examples to help students remember and make sense of the concepts. A solid Prealgebra foundation is so important for success in high school math!
Precalculus,

Precalculus

I enjoy teaching Precalculus. This can be a tough class for many students, especially if they had a hard time in Algebra II. I enjoy helping students develop strong algebra skills so that the more complex parts of Precalculus are easier to conquer. I've tutored Precalculus at both the high school and college level.

The ACT is one of my favorite standardized tests, and I love to make it less scary for my students. For the math section, I teach test strategy and time management in addition to the math content knowledge required.

Trigonometry

I always enjoy teaching Trig and have been doing so for about ten years. For many students, learning the unit circle at first seems like it will require a lot of memorization. I love showing students how they really only need to memorize a couple of things, and the rest of the unit circle can be filled out by understanding how each component fits together. I also enjoy showing students how other tricky parts of trig (like graphing transformations of trig functions) are doable if they break the process down step-by-step.

ACT Science

I've tutored all subjects on the ACT since 2003. ACT Science is more about reading graphs and understanding how experiments are put together than it is about actual science knowledge. In my tutoring sessions, I teach students techniques for getting information reliably and quickly from the figures. We also work on finding the relevant parts of the scientific method. Finally, since pacing is the key on this section, we work on developing speed while maintaining accuracy.

I thoroughly enjoy working with ISEE and SSAT students, and one of the greatest compliments I get from parents of my ISEE/SSAT students comes in the form of asking me to continue working with their child after the ISEE/SSAT is over to provide enrichment tutoring for their child. I'm always happy to do so since I love seeing my students develop their curiosity and understanding of various subjects.

In my 10 years of teaching the LSAT, I’ve helped students in the 120s get into the 160s, and I’ve helped students get past their plateau and into the 170s, even the high 170s! My own first official LSAT score was a 170, but I scored an official 177 on the July 2019 LSAT (digital version). I tutor full-time and specialize in the LSAT, so you can rest assured knowing you’ll be working with someone who is up-to-date and sharp with LSAT questions. My students pair tutoring with guided self-study so that they can maximize their efficiency. We work on developing clear methods and strong reasoning skills to move quickly and accurately through the questions.

Patient, clear, and knowledgeable

Carrie has been so helpful to my son as he navigates precalculus. A lot of his struggles come from a lack of confidence (which can lead to mistakes in his work), and she has been so patient and clear. We're so grateful for her help!
