I love math, especially Geometry, because it is beautiful and true. Math excites me the way other people get excited about sports or music. This is a bit unusual, so I understand when most people don't enjoy math and numbers the same way I do. However, my love of this subject helps me engage students who find math boring at best, or perhaps just plain difficult. I believe every student can learn math, and maybe even learn to love it too.

My education includes a Math Degree from MIT and a Teaching Degree from Harvard. These help me provide both accurate and clear answers to my students’ questions.

I taught high school students briefly in Boston, with a focus on underserved youth. Then family life brought me to Seattle, where I switched gears and worked for Boeing as an Information Technology Professional. Now I’m retired and live in Bellingham. I’ve volunteered the past few years as a homeschool math teacher, and worked as a Substitute Teacher for the Bellingham School District. My current focus is to be a great online math tutor.

I worked for 10 years writing FORTRAN programs for doing structural analysis of pipe supports in power plants. This included front and back end programs to simplify data entry and compare actual to allowable values for design constraints. I converted The software I wrote from the IBM FORTRAN H compiler to CRAY FORTRAN and helped debug the Cray FORTRAN compiler.

Elementary Education

Elementary (K-6th)

I have a Bachelor's Degree in Mathematics from MIT and a Master's Degree in Education from the Harvard Graduate School of Education. I am a certified Math Teacher in Washington and Massachusetts. I taught a variety of classes as a Substitute Teacher, including special education classes such as reading comprehension, for Bellingham Public Schools in Washington.

Elementary Math

I have a Bachelor's Degree in Mathematics from MIT, and a Master's Degree in Education from Harvard University. I taught math and physical science briefly in Boston before moving to Seattle. Recently I was a Substitute Teacher for the Bellingham School District and a homeschool math and science projects tutor. I am now broadening my scope to offer tutoring services online to anyone in need of a math and basic science tutor. I listen to and relate to each student as a unique individual and believe anyone can learn and apply basic math and related skills with appropriate instruction. I start with what the student enjoys and look for effective steps that move from there towards achieving the student's academic goals. I find creative ways to make learning math interesting and in some cases fun! I love Geometry and share my passion for math by using visual examples as much as possible.

Homeschool

Algebra 1,

Algebra 1

I patiently listen to questions and explain thoroughly math concepts and their supporting terms and formulas. I connect new math terms to those a student already knows showing the patterns that exist between them. I love math and enjoy experiencing the "I get it!" moments when a student realizes they understand and can now confidently use math they were struggling with more clearly and effectively. I am great at helping students translate word problems into equations and then "Solve for x."
Algebra 2,

Algebra 2

I patiently listen to questions and explain thoroughly algebra concepts and their related math formulas and terms. I find creative ways to connect new or confusing math terms to those a student already knows showing the patterns that exist between them. I love math and want to help others understand and experience math in a positive ;-) way. I can help with graphing, inequalities, "solving for x" and word problems. No math question will go unanswered. If I can't answer it immediately, I will spend my own time after the session to find the answer and send a response.

Geometry,

Geometry

I have a Bachelor's Degree in Mathematics from MIT, and a Master's Degree in Education from Harvard University. I taught math and physical science briefly in Boston before moving to Seattle. I designed a 3-D abstract connection game called Qua and regard Bucky Fuller, the inventor of geodesics, tensegrities and formulations for the design of "everything" based on triangles, as one of my heroes. I love Geometry the way some guys love football. Because of COVID-19 I now offer my passion for Geometry online as a tutor for anyone in need of a geometry, algebra or any math related subject. I listen to and relate to each student as a unique individual and believe anyone can learn and apply geometric concepts and related skills with appropriate instruction. I use familiar examples to make learning geometry interesting and in some cases fun! Geometry for me is more than just proving logical statements from axioms; it is beautiful and true in its clarity and precision. My goal is for every student to be confident and enjoy noticing and using geometric patterns in their daily life. They are everywhere!
Prealgebra,

I listen carefully to questions and explain math concepts thoroughly, making sure the student understands each step before getting to "the answer." I connect new math terms to those a student already knows showing the patterns that exist between them based on familiar examples. I love math and enjoy experiencing the "I get it!" moments when a student realizes they understand and can use the math they were struggling with more clearly and effectively.

I listen to and relate to each student as a unique individual and believe anyone can learn and apply fundamental math concepts and related skills with appropriate instruction. Precalculus is foundational to thinking mathematically and deserves to be clearly taught and understood. My goal is for every student to become confident and learn to use math skillfully in their daily life.

Combinatorial proofs are my specialty. I can help you count subsets, lattice paths, permutations and bit maps. I explain double counting, bijective and injective mapping clearly and how to use them in proofs. Pascal's Triangle is beautiful and it's amazing how it relates N choose K to the polynomial coefficients of the expansion of (x+1) raised to the Nth power.

Trigonometry

Trigonometry

Trigonometry is simple and confusing! tangent, secant, cosine, sine, 3.14159. I help students learn what they need to know to be confident using trigonometry concepts to solve problems. Knowing what a unit circle is and how to measure an angle in radians is important. One should also be able to prove the Pythagorean Theorem, not just memorize it! Knowing when and how to apply trigonometry identities and formulas, such as the Law of Sines and the Law of Cosines, and double angle formulas, becomes less confusing and easier to remember, when you know how to prove them. This is not as difficult as it sounds! -Woody (B.S. in Math From MIT, M.Ed. in Education from Harvard)

Test Preparation

ASVAB

ASVAB

I listen carefully to questions and explain math concepts thoroughly. Understanding what makes a formula true helps recall the right formula to answer questions on a test quickly and accurately. I am creative in finding ways to communicated new or confusing material to students in ways that are memorable and logical. I document each topic that is difficult for a student to grasp and I make sure the student's questions are answered for that topic in the notes I provide to the student at the end of each session. I am available to answer additional math questions related to a session between scheduled tutorial sessions.

ASVAB

Mr. Sherwood helped my daughter prepare for the math portion of the ASVAB. I was able to overhear his lessons. He was attentive, helpful, and knowledgeable. He was a great tutor!

Charles, 4 lessons with Sherwood

Really knows what he is doing

Woody was able to use explanations that made new concepts clear for my son, who is in 3rd grade. He was able to work effectively with my son even during a "cold turkey" lesson with no background prep. Very calm and agreeable. Highly recommend.

Aurora , 2 lessons with Sherwood

Great teacher! very understanding!

He was very helpful with a homework assignment on a program I’ve never used. He made the homework easy and quick to understand. An amazing tutor!
