Working with students to improve their writing and reading skills is a passion of mine because I have seen the positive snowball effect of improving these skills. Critical inquiry, understanding rhetorical strategies, research, and generating and expressing unique ideas are important across subject areas. Learning to be a stronger writer will make you a stronger student and employee overall!
My experience teaching college level English Composition and Creative Writing, combined with years of human services work, make me a tutor with empathy who can also push you to discover the writer within. I provide specific feedback and prompts to generate content for assignments, followed by strategies to organize and proofread your work. My goal is that you outgrow me because you learn to be your own teacher/editor! Writers are not born, they're grown.
I have a BA in English, and an MFA in writing. I am a freelance writer and registration advisor at a community college. I have worked with kids and adult students in many capacities, and I love working one on one with students to provide a tailored, targeted service.
I have heard from students that my approach takes the dread out of writing assignments. Whether you dread them or just want to bump your B's to A's, let me help you with those pesky essays! In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
