About Joan

Education:
BA - Spanish, French, Education
MBA - Statistics, Marketing

Experience:
Tutoring middle school, high school, and college students in Math, Statistics, Spanish, French, English, ESL, SAT prep, ACT prep, GMAT prep, and GRE prep.

I especially enjoy working with students who are struggling with math skills, find Spanish to be totally "Greek", face a Statistics requirement for a degree, have trouble showing their true skills when taking tests, or are totally committed to raising those entrance exam scores. I have also worked extensively with students who do not speak English as a first language.

The joy I find in working as a private tutor comes from the unique one-on-one relationship which is formed with each individual student. Each of us learns in our own unique style. Once the learning style of a specific student is assessed, we are then able to focus on his/her strengths when addressing the material at hand. I love getting acquainted with each individual person; this makes the time we spend together much more efficient and effective.

One of the things that sets me apart from other tutors is the fact that we focus on YOUR goals. It is important for me to understand the client's goals and aspirations. Our sessions can then be tailored to these objectives.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ACT English

With 12 years of full-time experience as a tutor, I've worked with a good number of test-prep students. Because each lesson is tailored to the learning style of the specific person, we manage to drill down to a time-proven method of achievement. I've always found the study of language to be a fascinating topic, and find that I instill a modicum of this enthusiasm while in the process of accomplishing the intended goal.

Algebra 1

Because each student I tutor is carefully evaluated for personal learning style and individual goal, our time together is both efficient and productive. I understand those who find math to be challenging, and I use a number of time-tested techniques to achieve the goal at hand. Tutoring is my full-time profession; I'm proud to be making this contribution to our community and our world.

Algebra 2

Math tutoring is a role I've truly enjoyed over my years at a full-time tutor. Although I enjoy the subject immensely, I also recognize that some students find it challenging. And because I take the time to identify both the goal & the personal learning style of each unique student, we successfully achieve improved grades as well as better understanding of the subject. Together we make it happen.

ESL/ESOL

When working with students, I especially enjoy helping those who do not speak English as a first language. I, too, have been a student in a foreign culture. I recognize that it can be a particular challenge for those who have chosen to do this. Because I specifically appreciate words, language structure and methods of expression, I take pleasure in assisting those who choose to pursue studies in these areas. I, too, am a lifelong student of foreign language. My experience as a tutor includes work with Vietnamese, Russian, Mexican, Japanese, Thai, Chinese, Ukrainian, and Taiwanese students. Often, when working with them, we have found that the difficulties are not about intellectual ability, but more often they relate to understanding of language, gestures, or other cultural phenomena. What a joy it has been to share American language and culture with them, while learning a bit about their own. We have always been successful in reaching their academic goals.

French

It's so much fun to assist students studying French. I can help them with their accent, their grammar, and their expansion of vocab. Having been a student in a foreign country myself, I know what it is to attempt communication in a new language.

Geometry

As a math tutor in the local area, I've worked with lots of geometry students. And though I admit that I really enjoy the subject, I also recognize that it's not always everyone's favorite. I work with each individual student, beginning at their own personal level of understanding, then expanding from there. My students find it comfortable working alongside me, knowing that I offer assistance without judgement. Together we create success.

GMAT

A good number of prospective graduate students have worked with me when facing their entrance exams. I'm qualified to assist with both the math portions and the language portions of the GMAT, having experienced success in achieving the target scores desired. My schedule is flexible and includes Sundays for those who are working.

GRE

One of the joys of my tutoring experience over the years has been working with college students interested in graduate work. Because I faced a graduate entrance exam as well, I understand those facing the GRE. I've assisted a number of students to improve both verbal and math scores on this exam. Each of my students is openly received as the indiviual person they are, taking into account personal goals and learning styles unique to them alone. Together we create success.

Linear Algebra

As a math tutor with a Master's Degree in Statistics, I have been tutoring Algebra students in the local area for a number of years. I have been certified by WyzAnt in both Algebra I and Algebra II, and have worked recently with students studying matrices. Between the two of us, we can certainly get the job done!

Prealgebra

Working with students in math is one of my primary specialties. And though I'm good at math, I have compassion and understanding for young people who find it difficult. Beause I take the time to identify how each student learns, we achieve success at a more rapid pace than is sometimes the case alone. I look forward to meeting your young student & guiding him or her to superior performance.

Precalculus

Lots of my students, over the years, have requested help with their Pre-Calc classes. I've worked with both high school and college students in this subject. Because I take time to get acquainted with each person's learning style, and make special note of his/her goals, we become more efficient in creating success. One-on-one instruction at its best!

PSAT

Now in my twelfth year as a professional tutor, I've worked with a good number of high school students who are preparing for either the PSAT or the SAT. Without question, we have achieved an improvement in scores. It's such a joy to see students succeed; it's the primary purpose of my career as a full-time tutor.

SAT Math

As a full-time tutor of highschoolers for the lasts 12 years, I've assisted a number of students facing their SAT's. Math has always been one of my specialties. I particularly enjoy helping boost the confidence & achievement levels of those who feel challenged by the this portion of the test. Because tutoring affords the opportunity to tailor lessons to the individual student, success is rapidly accomplished!

SAT Reading

For over 10 years, I've worked as a tutor in Whatcom and Skagit counties. Many of my students have requested assistance when taking the SAT. Some have needed help with reading speed, some with reading comprehension, and some with confidence level in a test-taking environment. Fortunately, I've learned techniques to address each of these scenarios and more. Quality one-on one instruction - working together, we create success!

SAT Writing

With more than 12 years as a full-time tutor, I've worked with lots of highschoolers to improve their SAT scores. I especially enjoy the study of language, yet understand those who find it challenging. Because I take time to assess the personal learning style of each unique student, we make progress in an especially efficient manner. Knowing the individual is the key to quality one-on-one instruction.

Spanish

Having worked as a tutor for the last 12 years, I've enjoyed assisting a number of students in Spanish. My qualifications include a B.A. in Spanish with teaching credentials, as well as university study in Mexico City. And though I've always found it to be one of my favorite subjects, I understand those who find it challenging. Keeping the student's individual goal and personal learning style in mind, we achieve success.

Statistics

With over 12 years of experience tutoring, I have worked with a number of high school and college students in Stats classes. I recognize that not everyone feels confident in math, and strive to assist those who find it challenging. I make a point to greet each student with an open mind, taking the time to evaluate individual learning style and personal goals. Working together, we achieve successful results.

Study Skills

I have been operating a full-time tutoring service in this region for the last 10 years, and have worked with both high school and college students, not only in their chosen fields, but in study skills and exam prep as well. I have trained in study skills at the local community college and have also studied multiple intelligences techniques(NLP) and self-talk improvement techniques.

Trigonometry

Trigonometry is a special favorite of mine in the wide world of math studies. And though I find it fun and useful, as a tutor I have great compassion for students who struggle with the concepts. It's truly a joy to see the light in the eyes of students who crash through those barriers and gain a clear understanding. I can help make it happen.

Great tutor

After 5 sessions Joan has helped my daughter feel more secure with her geometry class. She is now confident she will do well on her final. Joan has also spent time with her working on French and pronounciations.
