American History

American History

American History is vitally important for students to study and understand. The triumphs, mistakes, fears and foibles that have contributed to this great nation's birth, development help us to understand where we stand as a people and how we arrived at this point. History is living and breathing around us and the study of it is exciting and fascinating. I am delighted to assist young scholars in their exploration of the past they are now a part of and help them to see how it can affect and shape our future. I have a BA in English and Communications, an MFA in Creative Writing, a Masters in Education, and a PhD in Education, Learning Differences. I have taught one-on-one, children at risk and health home bound/disabled children, ages four to adult for twenty-two years. I worked with Educational Tutoring and Consulting as a tutor, Director of Special Projects and Executive Function Skills expert for six years in Mercer Island, Washington. I taught Creative Writing courses at the University of Washington Extension program for fifteen years and developed the Crafting the Character-based Novel Program for them (a three year MFA program) I have consulted and tutored individually referred students for over twenty years. I have many personal references that attest to my credentials and abilities if you require them.
Elementary (K-6th)

Elementary (K-6th)

I have over twenty years’ experience working with elementary students. My expertise is helping to develop study habits and executive function skills that will serve the child throughout his/her academic career and indeed the rest of his/her life. I was the Special Projects Director of a small, accredited alternative school, ETC Preparatory Academy, on Mercer Island in Washington State for five years. In that capacity I worked with students at risk, home bound, and students who learn in non-traditional fashion, one on one and in small groups. My concentration was to work on written and oral communication skills, time management, and other executive function skills. In all I worked with over one hundred students, some for several years in a row. Here in the L.A. area I have several students in the elementary age group. I enjoy helping both ends of the spectrum, the student who is struggling and the student who is advanced and needs additional stimulation. I hold a double PhD in academic related fields, English and Communications. I am a retired professor, who taught at the university level for over fifteen years. I am also an editor and publishing consultant.

English

I have over twenty years’ experience teaching and mentoring people of all ages from pre-school to adult. My expertise is helping to develop study habits and executive function skills that will serve the student throughout his/her academic career and indeed the rest of his/her life. English is not only grammar and syntax, but a language that has created great literature, beautiful poetry and communication between individuals for years. I love to help a student realize the potential in reading and learning from books. I encourage and assist the student to gain confidence in his/her own abilities and interests and to learn to communicate effectively. My goal is to introduce habits for the student to master, so that a tutor is no longer necessary, but that student can move forward with passion and enthusiasm, knowing how to attack any problem that is presented. I am also an editor and publishing consultant so the written word is vitally important to me. I work with authors all over the world and bring the skills and habits learned from years in the industry to introduce to each student I teach. I hold a double PhD in academic related fields, English and Communications. I am a retired professor, who taught at the university level for over fifteen years. I am also an editor and publishing consultant.

Public Speaking

I have been working with authors, presenters and teachers for over twenty years in all types of public speaking. I have been trained in the Dale Carnegie methods and have been a Toastmaster member in several states. Confidence, tips, practice and mentoring are all part of my approach to teaching public speaking. I enjoy working with people who want to develop their skills in the public speaking arena. I hold a double PhD in academic related fields, English and Communications. I am a retired professor, who taught at the university level for over fifteen years. I have many personal references that attest to my credentials and abilities if you require them. Study skills for all age groups begin with assessing the student’s strengths and weaknesses. In many cases, problems occur when a student feels overwhelmed by the work begin expected of him/her and how to organize things to complete assignments on time and well. I emphasize executive function skills and assist each individual student in developing strategies for scholastic success that work for him/her. In most cases, once the student learns how to break a task down into manageable steps, no problem is insurmountable for him/her. Good study skills are successful routines (sets of strategies) for approaching school work. They can be grouped into three general categories: materials management, time management, and information/idea management. These kinds of skills require some practice and not every student catches on or discovers the strategies that work best for him/her immediately. It can be a trial and error process. However, with encouragement to approach life as a scholar, and repeated work on developing strategies to master good study skills, every student can improve and begin to gain the confidence to succeed.

The ability to write well is a skill that will benefit a person throughout his or her life. Communicating clearly, succinctly and with correct and proper grammar can be taught. From these basic skills, a student's own creativity and imagination can take flight and from there, the possibilities are endless. I love to help a student realize the potential in writing. Great Tutor!! Patient, professional, kind.

I've always want to find the best tutor for my baby sisters. And lucky me, I got Dr. G. Not mention her kindness and patience, she is really good at tutoring. My baby sisters barely know any English to understand the material, but Dr. G found a way to communicate with them and play with them. I can tell by those laughs that they are not just learning English, but enjoying to learn it as well. The kids love her and her way of teaching. She is the best!

Great English Tutoring

My daughter and I were very pleased with the first lesson. She is very patient and knowledgeable. She is definitely the right person to tutor my daughter. She demonstrates interest in listening to students struggles and pays attention with care. My daughter really liked that she shares her point of view and ideas. We liked the pace of her teaching style.

Excellent teacher, Very detailed report!

Dr. G's lesson review is very detailed and helpful. It makes sense to me, lets me be aware of what the kids learned, and helps to follow up them easily. It's hard to find a right teacher like Dr. G. We are lucky!

Can't imagine what we did without her!

Pamela has been nothing short of amazing in the time that she has worked with my son, and I have been remiss to not say so earlier. The first time she met with him, she could tell immediately that his issues with ADHD were creating a dislike of learning itself, and set to work igniting that spark from within. Even the after-school caregivers who have observed her work with him have commented about how skilled she is in connecting and nurturing his natural energy and interest. Now that we are transitioning to middle school, we have many unanticipated challenges to face, but she is unflaggingly supportive and patient. She is a critical component of our academic support team, a trusted friend to my child, and will undoubtedly stand as one of the best teachers we could have ever hoped to find.

Prompt and helpful tutor for incoming graduate applicants

Pamela helped me edit my letters of intent (SOP) for my graduate school applications. I had to write 6 different letters, since they were restricted to a certain topic or length (250 words to unlimited). We mainly communicated through email, I sent my letters to her and she sent them back with her suggestions for me to update. I appreciated her honesty, clarity, expertise, and promptness. She was very helpful to me and made me feel very confident in my letters when I finally sent them out. I was accepted into 4 out 6 schools, and feel my strong letters were a significant part of my graduate application packet. I would use her again in the future if needed.

Excellent writing and English tutor!

Pamela G. was an excellent tutor for my sons. She worked effectively with them to improve their writing and reading analysis skills. She assigned writing exercises, reviewed them in detail at the subsequent session, discussed new vocabulary words at each session, and read and analyzed other writers with them. I greatly appreciated her detailed summaries and her comments about the boys' progress as a follow up to each session. Pamela G. had a wonderfully professional yet, kind and personable approach to each tutoring session. My sons felt that they learned from her and that their writing had improved. She gave them a greater sense of confidence in their own ability to write. Thank you!

Wonderful Tutor

Dr. G. was able to see at once that my daughter's struggled with reading was because of a lack of confidence not ability. Her calm patient teaching boosted my child 2 grade levels after a summer of hard work. Her wealth of knowledge makes Dr. G. the perfect tutor for any age.

Responsible Teaching

Pamela has been a very responsible teacher to my daughter throughout the whole summer. She would always have written down what they would do in class and later on give me all the details through e-mail. She is also very patient with my daughter, she makes my daughter want to learn more of what she taught and always wanting to finish her homework ahead of time. She is a very kind and responsible teacher that I would love to have again teaching my daughter next summer!
