My experiences have given me a unique perspective on the learning process. I believe that education can and should be individualized. When I work with students, I target their weaknesses and skill gaps. Often I provide extra resources to help students succeed because learning is a not a “one size fits all” situation; sometimes providing students a different perspective helps them to connect better with the concepts. Also, I guide students to good study skills and habits that are suited to their learning style. My goal for all of my students is that they become independent learners.

For over 10 years I have been working with students to achieve their academic goals. I started tutoring when I was in high school, helping my classmates. At Le Moyne College, where I earned my BS in biology with minors in chemistry and philosophy, I had the opportunity to work in the academic support center tutoring other college students in biology, statistics, and chemistry. After graduation I worked with at-risk and disadvantaged youth in the Syracuse City Schools: I provided tutoring for all subjects, SAT prep, and college counseling. I also worked at Morrisville State College teaching Basic Chemistry Lab and tutoring math, science, and study skills.

Botany

Botany

When I was in college I completed two botany classes, as well as completing four semesters of independent research in the field of botany. Two of my research projects were concerned with the effects of applied growth hormones and light patterns on the growth of plants. My Departmental Honors Thesis was focused on field identification of plants/trees and assessing their health. For both classes, as well as my independent research, I received "A"s. I was granted Departmental Honors after I defended my thesis to my committee.
Study Skills

Study Skills

I have learned many strategies to help students develop good study skills. Through my employment at Le Moyne College, as a high school tutor, I taught students how to better manage their time. I also taught students how to organize course material and study tips that helped students succeed, even when they were overwhelmed by a subject.

Great Organized Tutor for Algebra II and Chemistry

We have used Wyzant for numerous years with our two daughters in different parts of the country and Deanna is one of the most organized, professional tutors we have ever had. We have logged thousands of hours of tutoring time with Wyzant and can tell anyone that Deanna is well worth the money spent. She is amazing!

Great math tutor for struggling college student

Can’t recommend Deanna highly enough. My daughter has a learning disability and failed a pre-college level math class the spring quarter she needs to advance to a required course this fall. Based on Deanna’s excellent reviews, we enlisted her to tutor my daughter when she signed up to retake the class this summer online. As other reviews have noted, Deanna is incredibly organized and patient, and spent the time necessary to make sure my daughter understood the concepts she was studying and reviewing problems she missed on homework assignments and tests. Pleased to report my daughter successfully passed her class!

Knowledgeable and patient, insightful, keeps us up to date

Deanna is wonderful at helping my teen with dyscalculia understand concepts. Furthermore, she is very insightful as to what challenges my child encounters as a result of having ADHD and the executive functioning issues that accompany it. She is helping my child (and us) to try to manage that in addition to tutoring in math, which is very helpful. I highly recommend her!

Knowledgeable , patient & communicative

Perhaps just as important as being knowledgeable & patient is being able to communicate one's knowledge in a way that the student comprehends. We're still early in the process but early indictions are that Deanna is an effective communicator of her knowledge.

Knowledgeable and patient, keeps us up to date

Deanna is GREAT at connecting with my daughter and helping her understand math concepts. I also really appreciate how she keeps us up to date on how my daughter is progressing and any challenges that come up. Deanna is kind, patient, and very knowledgeable. My daughter has dyscalculia and Deanna is making math bearable for her, which is no small task. We appreciate her so much.

Knowledgeable and patient

Deanna took the time to get to know my child and explained concepts in an understandable manner. She also understands the challenges a child with ADHD faces, and she’s able to help with organizational skills in addition to middle school math.

Extremely Patient

Broke things down for me, and really put forth effort to help me connect the concepts even when I was frozen and frustrated. Great experience.
