My name is Matthew C., and I am currently a Freshman at Gonzaga University studying Computer Engineering. With experience in both formal coursework and self directed studying, I understand that learning to program is a steep uphill battle and it can seem very unintuitive at times. I became disillusioned with my coursework in high school and college when I found that my self studying was getting me a far better understanding of programming than my teachers or professors. As such, I aim to remedy that by emphasizing a fundamental, problem based approach to my teaching. I wish for students to understand programming and its patterns or concepts from a language-agnostic perspective before diving into deep project-based implementation, and I aim to engage with students and incite their urge to learn more outside of class and tutoring, and find the discipline of programming that they connect with.
I have strong professional experience as a full stack developer on the cross country timing system XCMeet.com, and I am well versed in managing complex systems and working in professional development environments across a server, web application, and 2 mobile apps. Most notably, I designed and implemented the splits feature on the website and had it tested on official cross country races with over 50 runners.
In addition to my professional experience, I have a year of volunteer experience as a peer tutor, giving one-on-one assistance to special needs students at my high school. While I did have to supervise them as well as assist them with their math or reading worksheets, the highlight of the experience was engaging with the students as their peer and connecting with them.
I aim to be a flexible teacher, and any resources or suggestions will be welcomed.
Thank you in advance.
