What gives me JOY when coaching for English Grammar, Impactful Writing, Public Speaking, Powerful Communications, Educational and Professional Goals, Being a Leader, Self-Advocacy, Success, and Overcoming Adversity?

I am fueled daily by my lifelong practice, appreciation, and respect for the power of language and storytelling. I believe skillful communication comes from an integrated practice of reading, writing, speaking, and listening. I support my clients, learners, mentees with personalized curricula and skills-based programs with intentional practice activities (like a writing practice.)

I create authentic, nurturing, interactive experiences that motivate my learners to choose to lean in, challenge themselves, practice skills and expand/refine their competencies and their world views as they evolve as communicators, presenters, leaders, and creators.

My professional experiences in journalism, publishing, advertising, group facilitation, and communication training include being a writer, editor, teacher, presentation coach, mentor, and advocate (and cheerleader) for developing authentic confidence and self-awareness in skills development with understanding and mastery.

10,000 hours of 1:1 in the last 5 years: I've enjoyed working with adult ESL learners and managers from Japan, Brazil, China, Russia, Mexico, in enterprise organizations (Meta, Stripe, Google, MongoDB, Gilead, Influx, Integrate, Duracell, Indeed, Kinross, Automattic, Yipit, DataDogs, etc.) on communication and leadership skills that contribute to their confidence, achievements, promotions, and thought leadership.

I hold a Bachelors in English, have also studied International Relations, and working on a Masters in Education for English Language Arts in Secondary Schools. I am also trained in Professional Coaching and a Certified Sparketype Advisor.

I look forward to coaching you for confidence, clarity, and meaningful communications.

Career Development

Career Development

For the past 10+ years, I have enjoyed working with 100s of globally diverse clients in tech, non-profit, healthcare, and social impact startups -- in advancing their professional and personal lives with intentionality, self-awareness, and purpose. I'm honored to help clients author cover letters, CVs, and personal statements that have gained them admittance to law and healthcare programs of their choice. I've helped professionals achieve promotions, and make shifts to new roles and new companies--per their aspirations. In 2012, I co-authored (with the wonderful Don Burrows), "Burn Your Resume: You need a professional profile": an integrated approach (winning the inner and outer games of finding work) to developing a professional sense of self. In 2019, I added the Sparketype assessment to enrich my career development and leadership coaching. I use the Sparketype assessment, which is similar to DISC and Strengthfinder (and even more relatable) to help my clients identify "Sparked" work that suits them best. What is Sparked Work that reflects you and all that you bring to the world of work? The more your work aligns with your Sparketype, the more likely you will be excited and energized, powered by purpose, fueled by flow, alive with meaning, AND performing at your best. I ALWAYS advocate for finding the work you want; I'll be a patient, encouraging guide for creating an authentic professional narrative showcasing your talents and accomplishments. Are you seeking to create/transition to more Sparked work? Let's have a 15-minute discovery call, soon!

Knowledgeable and patient tutor

Deborah helped me immensely in preparing for an important presentation. Our sessions covered a wide range of skills - public speaking, building confidence, improving my writing to be more impactful, and effectively communicating big ideas more concisely. Deborah was very supportive in her guidance. She truly went above and beyond to make sure I felt prepared and confident for the presentation. I felt she was genuinely invested in my success. I learned so much during the process of working with Deborah. I cannot recommend her enough as a tutor.

Tutor responded:

Kara, Thank you for the opportunity to help you when you were on a tight deadline--we dived in and you were coachable and I want you to remember what you are capable of! I'm glad my guidance helped streamline what you needed to say in writing and for your presentation. I'm here when you need it--and love working with learners like yourself. You showed up 100% from the start and thanks for trusting my suggestions. May you look for more opportunities to practice those skills you've gained.

Professional & Thorough

UPDATE: My daughter had her speech over the weekend, in front of 400+ people, notables, big donors, leaders in the community. It was her first time public speaking and she did better than many of the paid adult speakers! I had many people coming up after commenting on how 'concise & impactful' her speech was, the keynote speaker even looked for my daughter after to congratulate and connect with her. Deborah is a gem! She got her speech down to 1-2 minutes of pure impact, she didn't even need her notecards. TY Deborah! My daughter, 14, had just one public speaking lesson and she got more skills, tips, and coaching in one hour than the 4 hours she gets every week in her public speaking class! She has to give a 2 minute speech in front of hundreds and needed help on her speech and how to battle the nerves. Deborah is amazing, worked with her on writing a compelling speech and gave her concrete skills to giving a confident, well-spoken speech. We will definitely go back to her for more practice!

She taught me how to organize my presentation, including the starting and ending points, as well as sense of humor. so, she pinpointed my weaknesses and provided practical solutions to fix my mistakes and errors.

Tutor responded:

Irina, thank you for showing up each and every time ready to engage, explore, and trust the co-created process that occurs when we dialogue. The progress you make is because of the commitment you have to your language goals and your follow through on my suggested action items. Recognizing that integrating learning takes time, practice and coming to the next session ready to review and move into new territory--your awareness of this shows in how you take on the challenges. It is an honor to support you.
