I've tutored aspiring poets and storytellers, co-written speeches, letters, and op-eds with scientists and educators, and guided students in crafting admissions essays that singularly capture their voice, gifts, and mission as an applicant. I've tutored aspiring poets and storytellers, co-written speeches, letters, and op-eds with scientists and educators, and guided students in crafting admissions essays that singularly capture their voice, gifts, and mission as an applicant. I remember each of my students because each person's learning journey was important and unique.

The skills I share with you will go beyond the basics. At Yale, I studied one-on-one with an American Poet Laureate and won departmental prizes in essay-writing, literary translation, and poetry. I earned my teaching certificate in Connecticut, which has one of the most rigorous certification processes in the nation, and a certificate for AP English Language and Composition from the College Board. I have seven years of experience teaching writing.

When you choose a writing teacher, remember that language is power. The educators who participate in your development as a writer and reader also participate directly in the process by which you acquire the power to advocate for yourself professionally and academically, to communicate interpersonally, to express your emotions in a fulfilling and meaningful way, and to experience language as a form of art.

My favorite thing about tutoring is that I can customize this journey for you. Whether we work together once or many times, it will be my pleasure to get to know you and tailor each session to your personality, strengths, and goals.

Fun facts: My writing is polished but my boots are usually muddy. I hold a Masters of Science in Plant Biology and work as a Conservation Manager protecting and restoring riverlands. When I’m not in the field conducting ecological assessments, writing, or working with students, I’m biking up dirt roads in the mountains and learning the bird songs of southeastern Vermont one species at a time!

Botany

Botany

The love of plants has taken me from the trap rock ridges of my home state of CT, to the Atlantic sea coast, to the mountains of northeastern New England, to the high desert of southeastern Oregon. I earned my M.S. in Plant Biology with a focus on applied ecology and land conservation (UVM 2023). With a decade of classroom- and field-based teaching experience, I find great joy in exploring the world of plants with my students.
College Counseling

College Counseling

As an expert in writing and rhetoric in the English department, I advise eleventh-grade students at every stage of the college essay process. In the brainstorming phase, I coach them to consider admissions officers' perspectives in order to craft an essay that highlights their personal and academic qualities that are most desirable to colleges. Equally important are the writing and revision phases, when I work with each student to bring out their unique voice so that the essay is a well-polished and authentic reflection of who they are as a person. I am an experienced essay coach, both for the Common App personal statement and for the wide range of supplemental essays that students may encounter in their applications.
SAT Reading

SAT Reading

I’m a graduate of the Yale English department and a certified teacher of AP English Language and Composition, the AP class most aligned to the SAT reading test in its focus on rhetoric, structure, and tone of non-fiction tests. I have a passion for turning grueling multiple choice practice into interesting, skill-building conversation and drills to boost your student’s confidence and scores.

Extraordinary teacher!!!!

Hayley really helped me with my writing styles and techniques. She not only taught me how to make this essay better and stronger but also gave handful tips that I can apply to all my writings to make them greater. She is also good at encouraging student to come out with their own ideas-but better-with her instructions. I will definitely recommend her to anyone who wants some help with his/her writing.
