About Jaime

Bio

After 12 years of teaching in the inner city of Newark, NJ, I moved to Dover, VT and currently work for GCVS, as a special educator. In NJ, I received my master's in English from Columbia University. After finishing my master's, I joined the Dodge Poetry Foundation and participated in readings, events, curriculum planning meetings, and judging. After 12 years of teaching in the inner city of Newark, NJ, I moved to Dover, VT and currently work for GCVS, as a special educator. In NJ, I received my master's in English from Columbia University. After finishing my master's, I joined the Dodge Poetry Foundation and participated in readings, events, curriculum planning meetings, and judging. I became a published poet and participating artist in art shows and readings. In 2013, I completed my second master's in Special Education from Montclair State University. At the end of my time in NJ, I began to teach English at Brookdale Community College as an adjunct professor.

During my time at East Side High School in NJ, I had the privilege to work with a diverse population. Being an English teacher at the only bilingual school in Newark allowed me to gain experience with diverse populations making me a more innovative teacher focused on finding ways to foster an environment that highlights all the different super powers of my students. As a teacher at East Side High School, I taught creative writing, journalism, public speaking, English for Nursing students, Freshman English, Sophomore English, Junior English, Senior English, Honors English, HESPA review, Drama, Poetry, and Literature courses. I also mentored the softball team and was the chess coach for many years.

Upon moving to VT, I worked for 6 years at career centers. I assisted students with resume building and transition skills to help them develop job placement skills before graduation.

For the last 3 years, I have worked for GCVS as a special educator co-teaching in Spanish, Algebra 2, Honor Physics, American History 1 and 2, Psychology, PE, Art, Music, Algebra with Financial App, English IV, English III, Creative Writing, Mythology, American Folklore, and others. I ensure that all students have the technology skills, organizational tools and academic skills to be successful in an online environment.

For my master's work in special education, I completed my action research paper on how to motivate students to increase self-guided learning skills/study skills. I researched past literature on implementations that increased independent learning in students and how to most effectively aid students in developing self-guided learning/study skills. I implemented a program at Leland and Gray high school in their study hall that helped to increase self-guided learning skills/study skills within students. I documented the results with research based methods and composed my paper. At my current job for GCVS, I have worked to develop these same study skills for online students by developing online tools.

Patient, kind and knowledgeable tutor

Jaime was excellent -- she engaged my rising 8th grader for an hour with grammar and he enjoyed it! I especially loved how she was patient and accepted him, and looked at it as a positive that he was 'challenging.' My son left the session energized and ready to learn more. Thank you Jaime!

Excellent tutor.

Jaime tutors 2 of my kids, (11th and 12th grades) and we are very happy. Jaime is very professional, a great teacher, and teaches each kid according to his needs. Jaime insisted my son will send her his essays in advance, by email, in order to be more efficient at class, and accommodated different hours, according to the kids' needs. We are lucky we met her.

Great Tutor

Jaime has been helping our 5 year old son learn to play chess. She is incredibly patient, always prepared for the lesson and is great with kids. She provides good guidance/advice on how to reinforce the lessons in between sessions and provides good updates after each lesson.
