Teaching has always been an uplifting experience for me. As a high school life science teacher for 23 years, I shared my passion for the natural world and tried to ignite the joy of discovery in scientific exploration. Knowing that all bread does not rise at the same speed, I exercised patience and compassion with my students to explore and learn in a manner that suited them best and at their own rate.
After retiring from formal teaching in 2017, I followed some of my own passions, such as traveling and dancing. Most recently, due to Covid 19's impact on schools, I recognized that a need exists for students for supplemental opportunities to learn.
In addition to tutoring biology, I am also able to tutor basic to intermediate ballroom dance. I have been joyfully dancing for over 25 years, teaching for 10 years and most recently working as a dance host on a cruise ship.
Connecting dance with science is not a stretch. I believe that high school students do not get enough exercise during the school day. This in turn negatively affects their ability to learn. So, when I sensed a lull in participation in the classroom, rather than scold them, I taught a swing or salsa lesson to my students. This movement break definitely improved the learning behavior by the students.
