About Eileen

Bio

I'm retired, but still going strong and flexible with my schedule. I love to make a difference for students and see how they grow in their writing ability. I have worked as a high school English teacher with international students, tutored SAT prep, and really enjoyed working on college essays with students. Since moving to Vermont I have self published two books and quite familiar with that process. One of my strengths and nerdy passions is proofreading and beta reading.

Approved Subjects

ACT English

ACT English

I am certified in both ACT reading and writing.
ADHD

ADHD

As a mother of three and as a teacher I have had many experiences working with children who have ADHD. Students with ADHD can definitely benefit by having hands-on learning experiences. In fact, there are many strategies one can use to help an ADHD student focus and develop persistence with their study habits. Having a strategy to get organized is also helpful.
Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD)

Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD)

I have taught autism summer school and have worked as a substitute teacher in schools especially suited for autistic students. There are many levels and kinds of autism and each child is unique and responds to unique strategies. Positive reinforcement and a definite structure and schedule are some of the strategies that work best with autistic children.
Elementary (K-6th)

Elementary (K-6th)

Although I am a high school English teacher at present, I have also worked for many years with K-6 students in addition to raising my own three children. I can tutor almost any subject as I have good English skills and basic math skills. I work methodically and patiently and try to see what fits each student's needs. Every student has strengths and can be successful at learning. I student taught 6th and 8th grades at Gateway Middle School in Everett, WA.
ESL/ESOL

ESL/ESOL

I work at an international school high school that has students from all over the world with varying levels of English knowledge. I know many of the writing struggles that they have and I have them practice a lot in order to improve their ability. There are many writing tips and strategies available to the English language learner. Not only that but improving your writing and reading ability can be fun. It's your key to the future, as well!
Public Speaking

Public Speaking

As a high school English teacher I've worked with many students on their presentations - everything from giving short speeches to PowerPoint presentations. I have also tutored college students with their presentations. I know the value of making eye contact, having an engaging opening, using your own words and language and having an effective conclusion. Students often just need confidence through practice and using presentation 'props' such as index cards or a PowerPoint. A few strategies go a long way towards giving a student the confidence to present in front of a group.
SAT Reading

SAT Reading

I have helped many students with this tricky aspect of the SAT. It just takes practice and confidence!
Special Needs

Special Needs

Hello, I have worked off and on with special needs children throughout the years. I have helped children who are dyslexic as an aide with the Lake Stevens, WA school district and I have also taught Autistic summer school. I would love to be a part of your progam. I have received training regading some of our students special needs. I am patient and love working one-on-one with students; something I miss as a high school teacher! If I can help in any way please contact me.
Study Skills

Study Skills

I am a high school English teacher and I know from experience that getting organized is the first step towards having better study skills. Some students have been greatly helped by having a planner where they record homework assignments or by having a separate notebook for each subject area. Other ideas include a regular time for homework such as after school or after dinner. Even when a student does not think that they have homework they can benefit from reviewing class notes or reading over the content again that was covered in class.
Yoga

Yoga

Hello, I am a yoga teacher for high school students. I would be happy to help your group get started with yoga or to fill-in for a yoga teacher's absence. I have studied hatha yoga, and relaxation techniques, and I enjoy yoga routines that are active but not too difficult. I like to focus on flexibility, balance, and the sun saluation.

Exceptional Tutor Who Makes Learning Fun and Effective!

Eileen is an amazing English tutor! She connects with Tyler right away, making learning enjoyable and engaging. Her lessons are tailored to his needs, and she helps him build both his English skills and confidence. We love that she focuses on critical thinking and applying literacy across different subjects. Tyler is excited for every session, and we couldn’t be happier with her support!

Patient, personable, knowledgeable and helpful tutor

Eileen was very helpful in assisting me with a few college-level papers for a particularly difficult class. She helped me brainstorm evidence to use, outline, write and revise several papers for an upper-level literature course.

Very responsive, patient and helpful with giving useful strategies.

My daughter had a very good experience with Eileen. She provided her different strategies to help her as she prepares for the SAT. She feels the tutoring will strengthen her scores in the reading and response part of the SAT.

Eileen is the best!

Ever since I told my son that I had contacted a tutor for some English prep for the SATs, he was not keen on working with anyone. However, we have been fortunate enough to have found Eileen as a tutor. Eileen is patient, kind and a great tutor, suggesting ways to correct his mistakes, praising Terence when he does well and really respecting him as a person. I can often hear Eileen and Terence having a chuckle over something, which warms my heart because Terence can be a tough "sell" on some academic issues. She makes him feel comfortable while learning. What a fantastic person and teacher. Eileen is a credit to your organization and I would definitely recommend her as a tutor to anyone. Beyond the SAT's, I look forward to working with Eileen in the future for any of Terence's English needs. Thank you!
