Bio

I am a retired college instructor with a master's degree from St. Michael's College in Teaching English as a Second Language. I have over twenty-five years of experience working with high school, college and adult learners in both classroom settings and one-on one online. I am a retired college instructor with a master's degree from St. Michael's College in Teaching English as a Second Language. I have over twenty-five years of experience working with high school, college and adult learners in both classroom settings and one-on one online. My basic teaching philosophy is that learning should take place in a relaxed environment, proceed at a pace appropriate to the student(s), and should be both rewarding and fun! Which is how I conduct my classes. Further, I am adept at providing simple and understandable explanations for any points that are impeding a student's progress, and creating suitable, interesting, and enjoyable assignments.

In regard to writing, for the past year I have worked remotely as a freelance writing tutor for both native and ESL students giving summarized feedback and in-text corrections on all levels and rhetorical styles of expository college essays. I have proofed over 460 papers. Moreover, since 2022, I have had a number of CNF (creative non-fiction) essays and stories published in online and print magazines, so I am well aware of the work - writing/editing/rewriting - that goes into creating a polished piece of work, and am fully able to relate to any issues my students face with their own writing, and to help them overcome their obstacles.

In regard to ESL, I have taught all the basic skills including reading, writing, listening, speaking/pronunciation and TOEFL preparation, and have helped students raise their TOEFL scores to sufficiently qualify for full college acceptance.

I very much look forward to working with you to learn what you want to emphasize in our classes, and help you succeed in all your language goals.

For the past year I have worked as an independent subcontractor giving one to two page summarized feedback on higher level concerns (thesis statement, topic sentences, etc.) and in-text (editing, grammar, vocabulary, etc.) corrections using Whiteboard for individual college level expository essays (all rhetorical styles) for both native and ESL students for a variety of colleges contracted by the company I work for. To date, I have edited/proofed over 460 papers. Prior to that, I taught ESL to international college students at St. Michael's College, and the advanced courses included writing expository essays per the description given above.
