Hello! My name is Shane and I’m an active tenured faculty member specializing in organic chemistry. I have taught thousands of students over two decades in the classroom and many more one-on-one. I work with the American Chemical Society to write the National Organic Chemistry Exam and I am here to help students reach their organic chemistry goals!
My love for teaching organic chemistry began shortly after my own undergraduate course in organic chemistry when I was employed as a one-on-one and group tutor for organic chemistry. My graduate work included several more years of undergraduate teaching under the tutelage of the world-renowned chemistry educator at the University of Wisconsin, Dr. Bassam Shakashiri of “Science is Fun” fame.
I am passionate about meeting students where they are. I spend the largest share of my instructional time focused on the “why” of organic chemistry. I use a mechanism-based understanding approach to my own teaching and use no rote memorization. The breadth of my teaching and tutoring background has enabled me to develop numerous ways to teach the same topic as I have found different learners arrive at an understanding in different ways.
I am currently a tenured Full Professor at a small college in New England and I teach organic chemistry every day. I have taught courses from the 100-level foundational level to the 400-level with my principle teaching focused on organic chemistry I and II. My class sizes have ranged from 10 to 300.
Many of my past students have gone on to earn M.D.’s as well as Ph.D.’s in Graduate Schools in every area of science. As an author of the National ACS Organic Exam, I can help you prepare and excel on that exam as well.
