About Maile

Bio

Languages, cultures and performance have always fascinated me. My Thesis research for both MAs focused on the border of France and Spain, so I had to master those languages. I think of language learning like a puzzle or a game of chess: you learn the rules and then you can play!

Languages, cultures and performance have always fascinated me. My Thesis research for both MAs focused on the border of France and Spain, so I had to master those languages. I think of language learning like a puzzle or a game of chess: you learn the rules and then you can play!

I taught English language and literature at the New Sorbonne and Sciences-Po in Paris as well as French, Spanish and English at several international schools. I am IB certified for French Language B SL/HL and my students have a 100% pass rate. I am passionate about teaching, and I love tutoring because of the personal focus, finding the strategies that make YOUR brain work best.

I have a Master's in Anthropology, another MA in Theatre, and a BA in Romance Languages and Literatures. I always teach languages with a view to understanding the culture and with equal emphasis on linguistics and communication. My goal when tutoring and teaching is to make my students want to immerse themselves in the target language and culture.
I earned my Hatha Yoga certification in 2013 after getting certified as Pilates instructor in 2004. I have taught in studios, gyms, schools, and even a couple of diplomatic agencies while teaching abroad!

Having taught around the world and worked as a writing tutor during graduate school, I have taught/tutored English to people with many different mother tongues. I have also studied 7 languages, which has helped me to work out some of the puzzles of translation. Learning to be patient with myself as a language learner has made me more patient as a language teacher.

My Master's in Theatre included several different modules, with coursework in Traditional Western Theatre, many different kinds of Eastern and other Indigenous performance traditions in Comparative Dramaturgies, and Intercultural Theatre. I worked extensively in Devised and site-Specific Performances, which was the focus of my thesis, presented at and performed in workshops in the UK, and evaluated countless performances.

my daughter loves her!

After having a few other Spanish tutors on Wyzant, we found Maile. Maile is engaging, funny, and makes learning Spanish fun. Her other tutors just spoke and lectured the whole time and so my daughter would zone out. Not with Maile, my daughter loves her time with her. And that is saying a lot coming from a dyslexic daughter who struggles with learning Spanish in a classroom setting.
