About Carley

Bio

I want to help make learning fun and thought provoking for the student so that they can get the most out of it. My philosophy is that when learning is engaging, the student will become a forever learner. As a tutor my job is to make the learning exciting, engaging and accessible.

I have always been a lifelong learner. I started really getting into reading when I was about 9 years old, and that is about the time I got into history as well. I read mostly historical fiction and loved to learn about the facts behind the stories. History to me has always been exciting and engaging stories that I would love to help get your student to become invested in. As far as reading goes I tested as an adult in the top percentile (as an adult) in the state of Vermont.
I was first inspired to learn ASL when watching one of my favorite tv shows called “Switched at Birth” to go and learn this beautiful language. ASL has been a benefit to me working with children who can’t communicate yet. ASL has been found to be beneficial to those with disabilities who might have trouble with speech and that is what I can help with. I would use ASL for teaching Special Needs Students and parents to learn how to communicate better.
I got my degree in Early Childhood Education in 2022. I have been substitute teaching since 2015 for my local school district and the Headstart Program since 2022. I enjoy being a substitute teacher because it is a challenge. Being a substitute I have to be flexible and able to try different methods of teaching and I will bring that same level of flexibility to tutoring as well. I am able to pivot and try different techniques until it works. My favorite ages are the preschool and elementary school age groups. Through being a substitute teacher I have picked up some fun and engaging activities that will spark any child's imagination.
I think that my experience as a substitute can really benefit you or your child. I can pivot to try different types of teaching methods and learning styles.

Approved Subjects

American History

American History

I have been a history buff since I was 9 years old and I read the American Girls Series. I always wanted to be a History Teacher. As a substitute teacher I got to teach in every subject including US History.
Elementary (K-6th)

Elementary (K-6th)

I have credentials in Early Childhood to be able to teach kids in a classroom from ages 3 up through third grade. Most of my work has been working with kids ages 3 to 14. I have worked at a local Montessori School, my local school district, and I currently work at Headstart. I worked at three summer camps for campers ages 5 and up.
Literature

Literature

I am a big fan of children's and young adults books. I have an extensive collection of both. I read both regularly. Reading books to and with children is a great delight of mine.
Needlework

Needlework

I have been knitting for 21 years now and crocheting for almost just as long. I am a volunteer shop sitter at my local yarn shop. I established my own knitting group 3 years ago in my local coffee shop and we still meet weekly. I learned how to knit at camp and since then I’ve gone to other groups and events to learn more about knitting.
Reading

Reading

My reading skills tested in the top percentile for the state of Vermont and being a northern state, we have a lot of readers. I have helped students at the middle school level with their reading and writing skills. I love to read YA, Fantasy, and Historical Fiction. My favorite book series has always been Anne of Green Gables.

I took both ASL 1 and 2 at a local deaf school. I went to Community College and took ASL 1 again. It has become such an asset to me in my teaching career.
Special Needs

Special Needs

I have many years of working with kids who are on the spectrum. I was a camp counselor at two all inclusive camps. The camps were Camp Sweyolakan in Coeur'd Alene, ID and Camp Howe in Goshen, Mass. Some of my favorite campers were the ones who needed extra help. I am currently working at Headstart as a Substitute teacher and I did substitute teach for my local school district too. I took classes in Disability Studies at the Community College while getting my certificate in Early Childhood Education.
