I'm an artist, art educator, and college writing coach, who has taught critical thinking and writing at both undergraduate levels. I'm certified as a K-12 art teacher. After three years of undergraduate work in art history at Harvard University, I earned my BFA in drawing and painting from the University of New Mexico. I continued my studio training with a Certificate in Painting from the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, a four-year, full-time, intensive education in studio practice, and certification in digital media from Moore College of Art and Design. I earned both an MFA in interdisciplinary arts (including poetry) and art education teaching licensure at Goddard College.
I work as a writing coach, both freelance and at a small college, largely online. I teach critical thinking and writing.
In teaching and coaching, I try to construct learning the way you'd build a sturdy house. I start by making sure there are clear foundations and expand from there. I focus on clarity, simplicity (breaking things down so they're easy to grasp), and empowerment. Teaching is a joyful experience because students almost never realize how great is their potential, or the amazing success that is within their reach. I see teaching as being a companion to others' learning and empowerment. Just as drawing is visual thinking, writing is visible speech. We are all capable beyond our imagination, and there is so much to explore.
I am a cheerleader and encourager, someone who listens empathically and champions your cause. I have had tremendous success with my graduate and undergraduate students, and have enjoyed many hours in k-12 classrooms, making art with children and working in four school districts as a substitute teacher in all subject areas.
I give classes and seminars in critical thinking and writing to undergraduate and graduate students. Under my tutelage, students develop an ear for their usage. They learn to create outlines of various kinds for their papers, and then to examine them, with me, for content,
