About Cindy

I have been tutoring/teaching students math for the past 15 years. I have taught elementary through Calculus II math.

I enjoy the one-on-one tutoring and love to help people succeed. I try to make it fun and get to know how the person learns. I try to find out their interests to relate the problems to what they enjoy. Most word problems will start with their name. I try to explain concepts and ensure that they know how to solve the problems. When studying for tests, I try to cover all possible angles of concepts that may be asked on quizzes or tests for that concepts. While I do try to make the work interesting, I do take it seriously and do not allow the student to get away with playing, not paying attention or just getting the answers. I want them to learn it. I have been told by two separate parents of my students that I am well worth the hourly rate.

I enjoy working with both children and adults and like to see them succeed. It is very rewarding to see the smile on their faces when they tell me their grades. I even had one of my students call me to tell me that she was accepted into college and just wanted me to know. She was very proud of herself.

I try to be patient and encouraging. Math is easy and can be fun. Each student learns differently and I try to teach to the way the student learns. I try to make it interesting and fun. I have been thanked by many students for giving them the feeling that they can now "do" math. One student was very pleased that she could now "blow away" her older sister in math.

My schedule is very flexible. I am available mornings, afternoons and evenings. I accept students of all ages. So let's get calculating! Contact me now to schedule an appointment to get started.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

College Counseling

I have just sent off my last child to college. During the college search for her along with my older child a few years ago, I have spent many hours researching and visiting many colleges. I have spoken with many college admission counselors about what they look for. I have spoken with several college advisors about what is expected at the school and how their department works. I am familiar with various requirements for degrees and scheduling of classes. I am very involved in what my children are doing at college and they frequently call me for advice. Not only do I get calls from my own children but several of their friends call to "just get my opinion". I enjoy talking with the young adults and seeing where they want to go. I do not have a one direction attitude but take each person for who they are and what direction they are interested in going in. I like to help them see their options. There are always options.

Homeschool

I homeschooled my two children for several years and both kids are now in very good colleges (University of Virginia and Virginia Tech). I have tutored and worked with several other families that have been homeschooled or are homeschooling now. This has allowed me to see various methods of homeschooling and the results of those methods. I feel that I am able to offer assistance in many areas that arise in homeschool situations and am able to assist in the tutoring/teaching of homeschooling subjects.

Excellent at her craft and very patient

Cindy taught my daughter this week how to solve linear equations. Thanks to Cindy's patience and understanding in this area my daughter now has a better understanding of the problem. My daughter does not do her homework until Cindy is available to help her with , because her school teacher doesn't explain it to her understanding therefore she's unable to grasp the work.
