Through my experience in high school (IMSA, a 3 year state boarding high school for gifted students in math and science in Illinois) and college (William and Mary), I learned a great deal about how to study effectively and write at a high level. I have an intimate knowledge of AP test preparation in AP World History, AP US History, AP European History, AP English Language and Composition, and AP English Literature and Composition. I received a 5 on the AP tests in both English tests, AP US History, and AP European History through independent study.

I have helped students improve on SAT exams, ASVAB, and in passing math tests at the elementary and high school levels. One student went from 28 percent in fourth-grade math at a private Christian school to 28 out of 30 on a placement test to continue to fifth-grade math. His teacher had failed him in math for dubious reasons (he was at a B level in math for his last exams), and I gave him the knowledge and confidence to pass the math placement exam and avoid repeating fourth-grade math. I also helped another student pass the Algebra 1 EOC test in Florida after he had failed it a few times, so he could get his high school diploma. My work with a Club Z! student on the ASVAB helped him go from a 94 to a 117 on the GT section, surpassing the 105 needed to get his option 40 contract for guaranteed admission to the 75th Ranger Regiment and automatic access to Ranger school.

Good nonfiction writing for research requires finding good sources, and I have a talent for finding sources quickly online and in libraries. I can teach you this skill along with how to brainstorm effective theses or arguments for papers.

I adapt my tutoring to fit each person by listening carefully so I can figure out the optimal way to tutor each individual. Patience and a willingness to try different explanations are key to how I teach. I am comfortable tutoring a wide age group by adjusting for student age differences in attention span.

Approved Subjects

Algebra 1

Algebra 1

I took Algebra 1 before ninth grade, and it was one of many math classes I took on my way to finishing a physics major as one of two majors in college with history being the other major. I know Algebra 1 well because it is used on the SAT test, and I got a 750 for SAT in the math section.
Algebra 2

Algebra 2

I took Algebra 2 with Trigonometry as a freshman in high school and got the highest grade in my class. I understand how to learn and use Algebra 2 for other math and science classes like chemistry.
American History

American History

I got a score of 5 on AP American history as a sophomore in high school through independent study. I have read over 100 books on American history and have extensive knowledge on American history from 1607 to present day. In addition to American history, I have a strong understanding of the history of American foreign policy.
English

English

AP scores of 5 in both AP English Language and Composition and AP English Literature. I can read and write at an expert level and can teach other people how to improve their reading and writing skills. I am especially good at nonfiction writing with my background in studying history.
European History

European History

I got a 5 in AP European History, and I have studied Russian, German, French, and English history on my own and in high school and college courses. I have a deep understanding of Modern European History from 1756 to present times, starting with the Seven Years' War.
Reading

Reading

I have been reading on my own since the age of three. At the age of nine, I taught myself how to speedread, and I increased my reading speed from 270 words a minute to over 600 words a minute over three months. I taught a fifth grader from Afghanistan the basics of English from zero knowledge of English, and he was able to learn in about 6 months enough to begin talking to his classmates.
SAT Math

SAT Math

I got a 750 SAT Math and 1500 on SAT in 1996, which were 99th percentile scores. I know what is required to score 700-800 in the SAT math section in its current form on the SAT Digital test. I can help you understand the math topics covered in the SAT math section.
Trigonometry

Trigonometry

I fell in love with trigonometry when I took it as a freshman in high school in an algebra II and trigonometry class. Trigonometry is a subject that I find easy to understand and teach to other people. I am patient and can give different explanations if my first explanation does not make sense.
World History

World History

I was a history major in college, and I got a 5 in AP US History and European History as a sophomore in high school. I have been studying history on my own since I was 10 and have read over 200 history books outside of high school and college classes.
Writing

Writing

I wrote an honors thesis in history and a senior thesis in physics for my undergraduate degree at William and Mary, and I took several writing intensive seminars for my history classes in college. I also wrote a lot of papers in high school for science, English and history classes and got a 5 in AP English Language and Composition, AP English Literature, AP European History, and AP US History.

Knowledgeable and Organized Tutor

We can’t thank Luke N. enough for his help in tutoring our son. He helped in multiple classes with organization, test prep, and was knowledgeable in most of the subject matter. If Luke wasn’t as familiar with the subject he would read the course material. These were all college level courses. Our son was capable of the work load but he needed the guidance to stay on track. Luke was a great find!

The GOAT for PLSC students

If you are feeling like you have a hopeless class or assignment coming up look no further. Luke helped me write a 12 page paper for a 400 level course I knew nothing about. He did this by overviewing me through the process and showering me with his knowledge. He has good information on sources and articles that can help you as well as good insight on paper writing. Overall I learned a lot from this experience, 10/10 for Luke
