I am a Mandarin Chinese instructor with a PhD in Cultural Studies and university-level teaching experience. I currently teach Beginning Chinese at Christopher Newport University and have also taught courses in Chinese cinema and literature at liberal arts college.

I received my MA from a top university in China, where I developed a deep appreciation for traditional Chinese arts and aesthetics, including painting, calligraphy, and classical music. This background informs my teaching and helps students connect language with broader cultural meaning.

I focus on clear, structured lessons that build practical communication skills. Students actively use the language through guided practice, dialogues, and real-life scenarios. I adapt each lesson to your level and goals, whether you are a beginner, heritage learner, or preparing for exams.

I am patient, supportive, and focused on helping you gain both skill and confidence. I’d be happy to work with you to create a personalized learning plan that fits your needs.

I hold a PhD in Cultural Studies with a focus on film and visual culture, and I have several years of experience teaching Chinese cinema and film studies at the university level. I have taught courses on Chinese documentary, film history, cinematography, and global cinema, helping students develop skills in film analysis, critical thinking, and academic writing. In my tutoring, I guide students in understanding key concepts such as narrative, visual language, and cultural context, while also supporting them with essay writing and exam preparation. I am particularly experienced in Chinese and East Asian cinema, but I also work with students on general film analysis and theory. I adapt my approach to each student’s needs, whether they are new to film studies or working on advanced coursework.
