Hi, I'm Ben. It's nice to meet you!

I am a rising college senior earning my joint BA (Int'l Hons) in Greek & Latin from William & Mary (VA) and St Andrews University (UK). I've presented research at professional conferences and earned several university and national awards. I'm applying for PhD programs in the fall, and I intend to make a career out of studying and teaching about the ancient world.

My friends describe me as eternally curious, driven, and intensely dedicated to my studies. For these qualities, I owe everything to my teachers over the past 8 years. I got into Classics not because of the subject itself (although it is incredibly rewarding!) but because of their mentorship. The right teacher can have an incredible impact on one's life, both as an instructor and as a role model. My teachers changed my life, and so now I aspire to make that difference for others.

My teaching approach is founded on one main principle: we learn primarily through intentional, consistent practice. I like to spend lessons on guided practice of skills rather than lectures. After all, you can find great lectures for free online! When lectures are needed, I will typically make them brief (or assign something to prepare) before moving on to worked examples and guided practice. I am, of course, flexible to different teaching styles.

I see my job as not just to instruct, but also to help students work toward educational independence. I often work with my long-term students on goal-setting, motivation, time management, habit-formation, initiative, and other practical skills. These are the key to success in every subject, every field, and every career.

I have about six years' experience tutoring students from ages 13-50 in Latin, Ancient Greek, history, government, English, and math from Algebra I through Calculus II and introductory statistics. I often tutor AP subjects (I scored 5 on 13 APs) and I can also offer PSAT/SAT/ACT prep (36 ACT and 1490 PSAT).

If interested, please don't hesitate to reach out!

Approved Subjects

Algebra 1

Algebra 1

I have over four years of experience as a middle- and high-school math tutor, from 5th grade math all the way through AP Calculus and Statistics. I scored 5s on the AP Calculus and AP Statistics exams, a 36 on the ACT (including perfect score on the math section), and have received statewide recognition for my performance on high school math competitions. I have a passion for helping others understand mathematics intuitively and holistically rather than relying on rote memorization. In tutoring, I believe that the key to success is guided, targeted practice coupled with clear, intuitive explanations.
Algebra 2

Algebra 2

I have over four years of experience as a middle- and high-school math tutor, from 5th grade math all the way through AP Calculus and Statistics. I scored 5s on the AP Calculus and AP Statistics exams, a 36 on the ACT (including perfect score on the math section), and have received statewide recognition for my performance on high school math competitions. I have a passion for helping others understand mathematics intuitively and holistically rather than relying on rote memorization. In tutoring, I believe that the key to success is guided, targeted practice coupled with clear, intuitive explanations.
American History

American History

I am an undergraduate student seeking a degree in Classical Studies, a research- and writing-intensive degree. In addition to my high school achievements (which include a 36 on the ACT, 5s in 13 different AP classes including AP US History and AP US Government, and membership in the National Honor Society), I have won national recognition for my academic writing skills at university. Papers of mine have been published in a peer-reviewed national undergraduate journal and delivered at a national undergraduate research conference (with another conference forthcoming). I have a 4.00 college GPA, reflecting my strong performance in upper-level writing-based courses, including many history and archaeology courses. I also serve on the Board of Editors for an undergraduate research journal, editing and reviewing submissions relating to premodern history. In tutoring for AP US History, I seek to familiarize the student with the AP Exam format and provide targeted, guided practice with the skills and question types that are tested on the AP Exam.
Calculus

Calculus

I have over four years of experience as a middle- and high-school math tutor, from 5th grade math all the way through AP Calculus and Statistics. I scored 5s on the AP Calculus BC and AP Statistics exams, a 36 on the ACT (including perfect score on the math section), and have received statewide recognition for my performance on high school math competitions. I have a passion for helping others understand mathematics intuitively and holistically rather than relying on rote memorization. In tutoring, I believe that the key to success is guided, targeted practice coupled with clear, intuitive explanations. This is especially true for calculus, where explanations are often skipped over -- a practice detrimental to success in future math coursework. In tutoring for AP Calculus AB and BC, I focus on AP Exam practice from the very beginning, in order to develop confidence in the AP format right along with the content.
Classics

Classics

I am a senior in college, majoring in Classics (Greek & Latin). I've been studying Classics for over 8 years now (and have been tutoring it for about as long). I aspire to build a career out of studying and teaching Latin, Greek, and Classical Studies, and will be pursuing my PhD in Classics after graduating college. I have earned university scholarships and national awards for my skills and expertise, and I have presented on classical literature at professional academic conferences. I have experience with all kinds of different textbooks, resources, and teaching styles, including grammar-centric, reading-centric, and active/spoken methods, and am highly adaptable to my individual students' needs. Please reach out with any questions, I look forward to hearing from you!

Knowledgeable and patient tutor.

He seems like a native Latin speaker. His knowledge is incredibly deep and extensive, and he answers every question my daughter asks with ease. He helped her fully understand in just one hour what she couldn't grasp after studying on her own for several days.

Very Diverse, Knowledgeable, Calm, and Logical Tutor

With Ben's excellence in academics across various subjects, especially in Classical Studies, Ben is able to successfully integrate his diverse skill sets into helping my son with his AP Statistics class. He is very patient and encourages the use of logic in solving problems rather than simply using equations, and has encouraged my son to approach problems more critically. I would highly recommend others to consider Ben as their tutor when looking for help with various subjects.

Highly knowledgeable and thoughtful teacher

Ben is one of the best (if not the best) tutors we have worked with. His knowledge of Latin and his ability to teach you the material is top-notch. Plus, he is a joy to work with.

I got the book….

Simply another nice lesson, by which I am thankful for. It is definitely better now that I have the book.

Viveca, 17 lessons with Ben

I need to get that book.

The tutor…he is truly excellent and patient — no matter how many times you look stupid in front of him, he will simply try to help you. He won’t just give you the answer, but small hints that actually help. His style of teaching is also nice, and/so I look forward to our next lesson…once I get the textbook, of course.
