About Shelley

I hold a Master of Science in Telecommunications from George Mason University. My undergraduate work was in both Computer Science and Education.

Overall, I have four years of experience in college teaching of Information Technology, three years experience in a tutoring center for college-level student-athletes in history, math, statistics, English, and computer science a one-on-one setting, and three years experience with one-on-one and small group private tutoring and corporate training. I have worked with students with a variety of disabilities - including ADHD, autism, and hearing impairments. In addition, I have worked with a variety of skill levels and learning styles and I have the ability to adapt my teaching to techniques that work best for you!

I also have an art background. I have several years of formal education in art and I've taught photography, stop-motion animation animation, and color theory to junior high school students. This, combined with my Information Technology/Computer Science background, creates an ideal combination for teaching multimedia web development. Although I certainly also enjoy working with general computer problems as well.

I am primarily a tutor for web development and other computer-related topics and give priority to requests in those areas. I have obtained approval in other subject areas because I have tutored a variety of fields and students with difficulty in one subject area often have problems in related areas. For example, a student that is learning to draw vector objects might also need to refresh basic math skills or a student with computer programming difficulties might need to review logic or spelling. I am, however, open to inquiries in all of my approved subject areas and my past college teaching and tutoring experience has given me a unique ability to identify patterns in a student's thought process that result in repeated mistakes. I also have a strong ability to help students identify learning objectives in a given course and interpret instructions in assignments.

I have a physical disability and, as a result, I use a wheelchair for mobility. I think it's important that you be aware of this because it may affect our potential meeting locations for tutoring. For in-person tutoring, my preferred meeting location is within my own home although I generally hold initial sessions in a public place (such as a library or cafe) for the comfort of both parties and will meet regularly at this locations, at your request. I also am available for online tutoring. I have a dedicated tutoring space in my home with computers running both Mac OS and Windows as well as all of the software corresponding to my approved topics. In addition, I have a dedicated surge protector and external monitors for students who prefer to bring their personal computer.

My hourly rate assumes little to no travel. I try to keep my fees as low as possible so that students who want to learn are not hindered with a financial barrier. If you require travel outside of the Town of Vienna, Merrifield, Oakton, some portions of Tysons, and some areas of the City of Fairfax we will need to discuss a higher rate to cover my transportation costs assuming my schedule will accommodate the travel time.

I only accept a limited number of students in undergraduate statistics courses and I do not tutor graduate-level statistics, economics, or accounting. If you are looking for a statistics tutor, you are welcome to contact me however I can not always accommodate those requests. Also, I only tutor Chemistry to students I have worked with in the past because I find that it's essential to have a strong working relationship when dealing with complex material.

In addition, only tutor computer programming related to web development (such as HTML, CSS (and CSS Preprocessors), JavaScript, PHP etc.) I do not tutor Java, C, Assembly, etc.

I also do not have experience with students prior to 6th grade and therefore I cannot accept requests for students in elementary school as I feel they would be better served by a different tutor. The vast majority of my current students are in college and high school.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Throughout my years of teaching and tutoring, I have worked with several students with ADD/ADHD. I can tailor my sessions to a student's strengths - for example, incorporating variety and hands-on activities whenever possible. I also help uncover motivational concerns, provide organizational skills. No two students with ADD/ADHD are alike; I have a positive attitude and I'm open to new techniques.

Adobe Flash

I have taught college-level courses in multimedia web development which included the use of Adobe Flash animation software. I can demonstrate drawing of vector graphics and adding animation manually or through the use of ActionScript.

I have knowledge of human biology and evolution, archaeology, cultural and classical anthropology through previous college-level course work and research. My strategy in teaching anthropology includes relating findings and artifacts to current ongoing debates to illustrate the application of the past to our current lives and enhance appreciation of cultural differences.

College Counseling

As a college professor, I have experience advising students across the curriculum and can advise students that are currently enrolled in college or applying for college admission.

I can help high school seniors with their college major/program selection, application proofreading, and test preparation.

For students currently enrolled in college, I consider academic difficulties and/or challenging life circumstances and recommend approaches to collegial decisions that facilitate successful course completion. I also advise students in course selection based on trends in higher education and, when necessary, help students navigate options for additional support within their institution.

I have taught multimedia web development using Dreamweaver and Microsoft Expression Web for the past 3 years with CS5, CS6 and the Creative Cloud. I have advanced skills hand-coding in HTML 5, XHTML 1.0, and CSS 3, which compliments use of web authoring software.

Microsoft Access

I have four years of experience teaching Microsoft Access 2010 and 2013 at the college level. I can explain ideal methods for grouping data into tables, determining field types and restrictions, creating relationships, building queries, generating reports, and developing forms.

I have a formal educational background in photography at both the high school and college levels and I was an instructor's assistant for a photography course within the DC Public School system. I generally focus on black and white and I utilize either a traditional 35 mm camera, a handmade pinhole camera, or a digital camera.

I find it's essential to have a good foundation of technical skills such as depth of field. After helping to establish these basics, I can assist you in developing an eye for composition either through use of my personal examples or a review of your existing work.

As the owner of an online shop, for the past two years I have sewn pet beds and other cage accessories. My main area of expertise is fabric selection. Although, I can also help aspiring seamstresses get started by demonstrating fundamentals of machine operation and maintenance, hems, mending, button application, precise stitching, basic garment construction using patterns and pattern modification.

Study Skills

I have completed graduate-level coursework in androgogy and pedagogy (how children and adults learn) as well as assessment.

I help students develop lifelong skills and good study habits through hands-on tips to organize course material and identification of ways to read and study that work with individual learning styles.

Web Design

I have been teaching web design at the college level for the past three years. I am proficient with writing both XHTML 1.0, HTML 5, and CSS 3 manually as well as using MS Expression Web or Adobe Dreamweaver. I have an art background and a solid understanding of design concepts and current issues with regards to web design.

An Amazing Teacher

She is a really great tutor. I took her for my philosophy course, and I was not interested in philosophy at all. But, she made it very easy to understand, and she likes to make sure her students comprehend the material as easy as possible. She is also very very very patient with her students: she can say things over and over again which is not all tutors tend to do. If you want to succeed i
