About Shannon

I'm glad you've found me! I am an experienced science teacher who is offering tutoring to suit your needs. I'm sure you'd like to know a little about my background and what I can do for you - so let's start with my experience/expertise.

I have almost 20 years of teaching science. Primarily I teach all things chemistry at this point in my teaching career(regular, honors, AP, and a semester of Organic Chemistry.) I also teach other sciences periodically (environmental, biology, physical science, and a little physics) at the high school level and I am very capable of helping with lower level sciences (K-8 grade), as well. I am certified to teach chemistry and biology in the state of VA and I have a 100% pass rate for my chemistry SOL, and a pass advance rate of between 25-51% depending on the year- both well above the state average. I encourage my second year students to take the SAT Chemistry exam and they do very well (745+ / 800 ) year after year. I have been on the ACS National HS Exam writing committee for almost 8 years. This means I know about standardized tests and how to prepare for them. (Of course, you need to know your content, but there are other things you need to know, as well.)

I have been tutoring and providing home-bound instructional services for students for years. I would be happy to work with you to meet your needs. This could include working with you one on one, via the internet/Skype, etc. I can focus on AP topics, SOL topics, private school - I'll help with what ever you need, and even can help with home-schooled children taking higher level courses. We can work on specific content, strategies to tackle new content on your own, and more.

Lastly, I will provide you with an update at the end of each session so you know what we worked on, suggestions I may have made, etc. I do hope to hear from you soon. I want all students to find success in their science classes and ultimately enjoy them. I am here to help make that happen.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ADHD

I have been working with students with varying special needs for almost 20 years, including ADD/ADHD and multiple LD classifications. I fully recognize that education is not a one size fits all endeavor and I have a 'bag of tricks' I pull from (and add to!) on a regular basis as I am faced with students with challenges.

I can also make suggestions for ways to 'chunk' material into units that have a natural flow so that students with ADD can still master material asked of them - just in more manageable doses tailored to their attention span.

Praxis

I have a MS in chem ed, a BS in Biology/Chem and an almost perfect score on the Praxis math test - and high scores on the other Praxis subtests, as well. I have taught and tutored kids/young adults in test prep for SAT and PRAXIS for almost 20 years.

In order to receive my own teaching credentials, I had to take and pass several Praxis exams.

SOL

I have been teaching "SOL Chemistry" for the last four years at the high school where I work (after teaching in a private school over 12 years). I have a 100% pass rate and a 25-51% pass advance rate - depending on the semester. These results are well above the state average - and I work in a high poverty level school. (Because kids can do great things when you teach them they can!)

I have an endorsement in chemistry and a MS in science education with a chemistry focus.

Very good at breaking topics down

Shannon is very good at what she does! She has the ability to make easy connections to material and can explain things very well by breaking the topic(s) down. She is very patient and understanding and will be sure that you understand the material before your session is over.
