I am a Shakespeare scholar and veteran Language Arts educator with nearly 20 years of teaching and tutoring experience. I hold an MFA and an MLitt in Shakespeare & Performance, as well as an MA in Teaching, and I maintain active teaching credentials in Virginia and California. My background blends advanced literary study, classroom pedagogy, and theatre practice, making me especially effective at supporting students with Shakespeare, literary analysis, academic writing, and college-preparatory English.
Since 2006 I have taught students ages 7 and up in a wide range of settings, including elementary, middle school, and high school classrooms; undergraduate courses; nonprofit education programs; summer programs; and one-on-one tutoring. I regularly help students with Shakespeare, classic and contemporary literature, essay writing, close reading, research papers, and exam preparation. I am particularly experienced in working with advanced students, college-bound high schoolers, and students who feel intimidated by challenging texts.
My tutoring approach is individualized, discussion-based, and engaging. I focus on helping students build transferable skills in reading comprehension, literary analysis, and writing clarity rather than memorizing answers. Sessions may include unpacking complex passages, strengthening thesis-driven essays, preparing for tests or presentations, or using performance-based techniques to make any author’s language more accessible. Families often seek me out for thoughtful, high-level academic support that balances rigor with clarity and confidence.

Acting

Acting

I am an MFA-trained theatre artist with specific expertise in Shakespeare and clowning. I have directed students in full-length productions of classical and contemporary works, and acted in dozens of productions throughout my career. I help actors understand text through action, make strong interpretive choices, and connect language to intention and physicality.
English

English

Since 2006, I have been tutoring and teaching students of all ages in English Language Arts. I hold current ELA teaching licenses in both Virginia and California. I specialize in high school English, and am particularly adept at helping struggling students find ways to succeed.
Essay Writing

Essay Writing

I hold an MLitt (Master of Letters) in Shakespeare, a rare and specialized degree focused primarily on literature and composition. I have professionally tutored, edited, and proofread the essays of students, peers, and employers for over 20 years. As a teaching artist I have trained students and professionals in the art of rhetoric through workshops and other performance-based techniques.
Literature

Literature

I have advanced degrees in literature, particularly classical literature such as Shakespeare, and I’ve been a high school English teacher for many years. You can see my full credentials on my profile.
Public Speaking

Public Speaking

I have taught Public Speaking courses at the undergraduate level. More recently, in my capacity as a teaching artist, I have led Corporate Communication & Leadership trainings that combine time-tested acting techniques to improve stage presence and listener engagement with applied rhetorical appeals in oral delivery. When I was an English and Drama teacher, many of my units focused on improving my students' public speaking skills.
Theater

Theater

I earned my Bachelor's degree in Theatre Arts from UC Santa Cruz, specializing in physical theater (aka clowning, mime, devising, etc.), and I have an MFA in Shakespeare & Performance. I have developed and taught rigorous theater arts curriculum as a classroom teacher and a teaching artist that focused not only on performance techniques but also on theater history and traditions from around the world. I have also been a stage manager, dramaturg, and director for a number of productions throughout my career.
Thesis Writing

Thesis Writing

I hold three Master's degrees: an MFA, an MLitt, and an MAT, all of which required writing academically researched theses of 50-100 pages, two of which have been published. I frequently serve as a thesis mentor and supervisor for graduate students in local graduate programs. I also attend academic conferences frequently in order to continue learning from other incredible writers and thinkers in my field .
