I am a member for the past 13 years of the REACH home school group of about 500 families. My son graduated through home school and is now a Traveling Nurse. My daughter was struggling in public school unable to read. I withdrew her from public school and tried different avenues -nothing worked but homeschool. She is now a middle school teacher. After my children graduated I discovered my gift to work with children with special needs - ADHD, executive dysfunction, Asperger's syndrome, autism, dyslexia (6 different types including dyscalculia). Some of these children have graduated from home school and enrolled in college. To further assist my students I have the following graduate certificate degrees through Liberty University: Gifted Education, Preschool Education, Educational Technology and Online Instruction, and finally Autism Education. I have my Bachelors in Management Information Systems from Pace University, New York, NY.

I love tutoring students and I have a track record for success. I meet the student at the place where they currently need help. I staff their weaknesses and there is nothing they cannot accomplish. Once the lights come on, it is a wonderful feeling for both of us. I traveled to Lorton, VA for many years offering after-school enrichment tutoring to multi-cultural public school students in Reading/Phonics, English and Math (Basic through Algebra). Living in Stafford, VA it is now time for me to help students in my own backyard.

I give my students a lot of theory. Numbers change all the time but the steps to accomplish your goal will remain the same. While I am helping a student, I hold their hand long enough then I let them loose still under my guidance. Once they are ready, their confidence is built because they finally understand what they were struggling with. Long before I graduated from high school, I loved English. For fun I would complete English workbooks. It really stuck. In college I excelled in writing and scored for the first time 1010/1010 - a perfect score.

Approved Subjects

ADHD

ADHD

I am a veteran home school teacher and I currently teach multiple subjects to special needs children with ADHD. I am also an advocate for certain exercises that really help them to focus on task at hand. I am very passionate about helping them and they really start to excel. In the past, my ADHD former students have graduated from high school and gone on to enroll in Germanna or felt that they could give public high school another chance - so far so good.
Algebra 1

Algebra 1

I am a college graduate and I have been teaching Algebra 1 classes for many years in the home school arena. I am very passionate about it and this comes through to my students who start to excel. My love of Algebra 1 becomes contagious and many a student's self esteem has been lifted because of the techniques that I use to teach them that Algebra 1 can be fun.
ASVAB

ASVAB

I have been an ASVAB test prep strategist for over 15+ years. The ASVAB is a test that is based on quality instead of quantity and those that are serious will put forward a long term study plan. If you do not, the wait is 6 months between test. There are 4 subtest that a student must do well in order to qualify for entrance into the military. Each branch of service have their own qualification score for admittance. I have seen a lot of students mention performing well on the Mathematics Knowledge section. Even though this section is very important, all students must do well on Paragraph Comprehension. The military wants to make sure that you can comprehend orders. My qualifications - a military wife of over 35 years.
Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD)

Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD)

Received my graduate certificate degree in Autism Education in May of 2020. Extensive experience working with the following children on the spectrum: high functioning aspherger's syndrome, low functioning aspherger's syndrome, non-verbal, and autistic/dyslexia. Major success in teaching reading and upper-level math for the past 5 years.
Creative Writing

Creative Writing

As a full-time homeschool teacher and public school tutor, many of my students were missing the essentials of English. They did not know the parts of speech, sentence structure, topic sentence nor thesis statement, the writing process, and the list goes on. I specifically had to create a course entitled "Creative Writing with an English Twist" to meet this need. My public school students went from writing like they texted to getting A's on their writing assignments. In the homeschool arena, my students have actually written books that were published. I make creative writing easy and a lot of fun.
Dyslexia

Dyslexia

Over 15 years as a member of multiply dyslexia associations that have supplied me with the necessary tools to test and tutor children and adults with dyslexia. Since there are 6 different types of dyslexia, the testing pinpoints the type to be addressed. Exercises are designed to help the left hemisphere and right hemisphere of the brain to talk to each other. Dyslexia-based programs designed by PhD educators to help children (even autistic) and adults to read are used along with the Orton-Gillingham approach to reading which help struggling readers. One of my major success stories is a young man age 20 already diagnosed with dyslexia but he could not pass the ASVAB test. After working with me for 2 months, he was able to pass the test the first time and enlisted in the Coast Guard. Another boy age 9 who was homeschooled, was diagnosed with dyslexia and was filled with anxiety about reading. After working with me for only 3 months, he no longer had a fear of trying to read. He graduated from 3rd and 4th grade simultaneously. His grandmother was amazed at this progress since as a licensed educator she could not get him to read.

The most patient and understanding tutor

Sherri helped my son study for the math portion of the ASVAB. He has consistently struggled throughout his high school years in math and was casted aside by many teachers. His math abilities were severely lacking; however Sherri has swooped in and helped my son gain skills and confidence in his math/algebra. He is passing practice tests and is scheduled for his ASVAB test next week. He is even considering college; thank you Sherri!!

She treats my son with respect and not like a child who doesn't know anything. She understands he is an expert on himself and she helps him discover how to work around his executive dysfunction.

Sherri is patient, clear, and passionate about her students being successful

In a few sessions, Sherri quickly assessed our daughter's knowledge of English grammar and brought her several steps forward in her grammar skills. She is calm and worked smoothly through the concepts, building from more uncomplicated to more complex concepts. And finally, Sherri was provided positive feedback and words of encouragement to our daughter. All together, Sherri created an excellent approach for our teen.
