About Sarah

Hi! My name is Sarah! I am studying for my TESOL Certificate at Northern Virginia Community College. I am passionate about teaching English as a Second Language. I volunteered with an ESL program from 2011-2015, after which I enrolled in the certificate program. Presently, I work as a substitute ESL Teacher at Columbia College. I also recently began tutoring through Wyzant.

My education includes an undergraduate degree in French and English, a Master's degree in French, and seven completed courses in the TESOL program. Over the years, I have worked as a tutor and a classroom teacher. One of my greatest strengths is being able to communicate my enjoyment and fascination with the English language to others. I especially enjoy tutoring because it is so flexible- you can tailor the lesson to the needs and interests of your individual student in a way that is not possible with a large group. Regarding teaching methods, I prefer the task-based method I am learning in my present program, because it gives students a chance to use the language without first focusing on grammar. Role-playing, discussion and working with realia (real-life objects) are some of my favorite methods of teaching. I can't wait to meet you and begin the exciting process of helping you master English!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Grammar

I taught grammar in a volunteer ESL program for four years. In the past year, I have led grammar lessons at the college level and worked as a private tutor. My thorough grasp of grammar rules and usage allows me to give students the structure they need to speak and write English with confidence.
