Bio

Science is my passion! Currently I teach Biology and Biochemistry at the undergraduate level, but I have also taught at the high school and adult levels. I have extensive research experience (St. Jude Children's Research Hospital and Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center) and I find that this practical background makes my teaching more relevant. I have been licensed in Virginia to teach Biology, Chemistry, and Earth Science. Special interests include genetics, biochemistry, and ecology.

My approach to tutoring is first to get to know my students and their specific needs, and then to find the best set of exercises and tools to develop skills needed for success. I will guide you step-by-step through material in person and then give you additional independent practice with constructive feedback. I am developing a series of on-line videos to help students with problems and concepts between in-person sessions. I strive to be accessible and responsive to the needs of my students to foster their learning and success.

Approved Subjects

ACT Science

ACT Science

My background as a research scientist has given me excellent skills of analysis. I enjoy teaching my students to develop good reading comprehension of scientific information. Test results can be greatly improved by learning and applying these abilities.
Biochemistry

Biochemistry

My doctorate in molecular biology involved extensive coursework in biochemistry, especially biomembranes, biopolymers, and cellular regulatory mechanisms. Postdoctoral work provided training in protein purification, in vitro gene transcription systems, and enzymatic assays. In addition, I have participated in research investigating the metabolism and efficacy of drugs used in cancer treatment.
Biology

Biology

I currently teach undergraduate courses in introductory biology, biochemistry, and virology. I have a BS in general biology and a PhD in molecular biology. I have done research on organisms ranging from bacteria and viruses to amphibians and mammals.
Chemistry

Chemistry

Although I have extensive professional experience in biochemistry and molecular biology, I am well-grounded in general chemistry. My Virginia teaching license includes an endorsement in chemistry and I currently teach chemistry at the high school level. I am very well versed in the Virginia Standards of Learning for chemistry.
Ecology

Ecology

I am currently teaching AP Environmental Science and have taught other high school ecology courses. I am enthusiastic about this interdisciplinary subject and enjoy helping students make connections between earth systems and their everyday lives. I also direct student environmental research projects that are competitive at the state level.
Genetics

Genetics

I have earned a PhD in molecular biology from Vanderbilt University where I studied genetic interactions between E. coli and Bacteriophage T4 (two peer-reviewed papers published). I completed a postdoctoral fellowship at the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center where I studied transcription of ribosomal RNA genes (one peer-reviewed publication). I served as a research specialist at St. Jude Children's Research Hospital where I did research on the interactions of oncogenes and tumor suppressor genes in mice and human cell lines (four publications). In graduate school I was a teaching assistant for an introductory molecular biology course, and did extensive tutoring of college freshmen and sophomores.
Geology

Geology

I am largely self-taught in the field of geology, having learned through the reading of several textbooks. I have passed the Earth and Space Science Praxis II test for teachers and my Virginia teaching license includes an Earth and Space Science endorsement. Currently I teach AP Environmental Science, and geology is a major component of that course.
Microbiology

Microbiology

My doctoral work involved the study of interactions between bacterial physiology and viral development. I currently teach a research class that involves the directing of several student microbiology projects.

Excellent

One of the most amazing teachers I have encountered! He put things in a new perspective and explained things in a way that was understandable. He was considerate and answered all my questions. Dr. Mark was fair and easy going. He is definitely somebody who knows what they are talking about.

helpful with biology

My Daughter mentioned that she needed help that night for biology. Fortunately Mark was available and was able to help. He has a lot of expertise and is a good listener for my daughter. So we are grateful to Mark. Her grade has been pretty solid and much of that is due to Mark’s tutoring. Since it is a tough class. Thanks!

My Daughter was talking about getting out of the Honors biology class and so we scrambled to find a tutor. After 2 sessions my daughters confidence is much higher as she got a 96 and a 90 on a quiz abd a test. So we are grateful to Mark. Thanks!

knowledgeable, Good communicator.

He was knowledgeable and was quick to understand what our daughter needed to know. Good communicator. We have another session being planned tonight, I hope, as our daughter surprised us with the news she has a quiz tomorrow! Guess we should have been looking at the syllabus more closely!
