Hello, my name is Ben C. and I am currently employed as an Instructor for a Surgical Technology Program in Roanoke, Virginia. For those not familiar with the profession, Surgical Technologists assist surgeons during all types of procedures; our responsibilities include gathering and setting up all equipment and instrumentation needed for surgery, maintaining a sterile field in the Operating Room, and working with the surgeon during the case. It is one of the most rewarding fields in healthcare and I am proud to be a part of it. For the past seven years, I have been training students in the practical skills of the profession and enjoy watching students grow from people unfamiliar with all things surgical to students with the confidence, skills, and drive to become successful Surgical Techs. Teaching is something I truly enjoy and am passionate about; I have been fortunate to encounter great teachers in my life who taught me not only certain skills, but how to be a better husband, father, and person. Those are traits I hope to pass on to my students.
I have been involved in fitness most of my adult life, stepping into my first gym at the age of 20. In the decades since, I earned advanced ranks in martial arts, trained in various disciplines, including weight training and wrestling. Currently, my fitness regimen is bodyweight training; in my opinion, BW training, or calisthenics, is one of the most effective modalities in use. Unlike weight training, bodyweight exercise trains the body as a synergistic whole, rather than with isolation movements. Recently, I became a Certified Fitness Trainer through the International Sport Sciences Association (ISSA), turning my passion for fitness into a profession. Currently, in addition to Surgical Technology, I work as a Personal Trainer in the YMCA.
I am looking to take what I have learned over the years in bodyweight training and pass it on to others who share my love for this modality. Aside from being a great way to stay in shape, calisthenics cost nothing to practitioners, can be done anywhere, and can be modified from beginner to advanced. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I have 20 years of weight training experience in New York. I am a Certified Fitness Trainer through the International Sports Sciences Association (ISSA) and will be specializing in Strength and Conditioning training in the near future. I have trained family and co-workers in weight training and other areas of fitness.
Fitness has been a passion of mine for years. I have worked with traditional weight training modalities, wrestling, and martial arts. Currently, my training encompasses bodyweight training, or calisthenics, a system I have adopted over the past ten years.
I have been involved in martial arts for three decades. I am a Certified Instructor in Nishi Ryu Jujutsu, a system I trained in for twenty years. For ten of those years, I taught in that system, alongside my instructor. I also hold ranks in Judo, Karate, Aikido, and Vee Arnis Jujitsu.
