Greetings All! My name is Murphy and I'd love to help you with all your Math needs!

Education and Research
I received my M.Sc. in mathematics from the University of North Florida in 2020, graduating with a 4.0 GPA. My master's thesis culminated in a research paper entitled "Harmonic Morphisms and their Milnor Fibrations" which you can see here: https://link.springer.com/article/10.1007/s10231-023-01311-4

I received a B.Sc. in mathematics with a minor in physics in 2012, graduating summa cum laude. At the end of my senior year, I was given an unsolicited award from the mathematics department for "Excellence in Real Analysis (Calculus)." I also have a good amount of research experience; I conducted an independent project in theoretical physics during my undergrad and then, upon graduation, took a paid internship position at the University of Technology at Troyes, France assisting in computational nano-physics research.

Teaching/Tutoring Experience
I am currently a full-time math professor at Virginia Western Community College. In a teaching capacity, I have worked both as a high school mathematics instructor at A. Philip Randolph Academies of Tech. and as an adjunct instructor in the math and science department at Florida State College at Jacksonville (FSCJ) and at the University of North Florida. I have also worked as a tutor for many years, both privately and professionally, tutoring for Sylvan Learning Center as well as FSCJ. I am now currently employed as a career math tutor at FSCJ's downtown campus where I tutor in a wide range of subjects; everything from Elementary Algebra to Differential Equations, as well as General Physics I & II and Statistics & Probability. I am certified by the College Board to teach AP Calculus AB.

Approved Subjects

Algebra 1

Algebra 1

One could simply not excel in mathematics without sound algebra knowledge and skills. As a tutor for last two years, I could not avoid having to help students with their algebra, no matter what the math subject was. I am familiar with all the standard algebra pitfalls and misconceptions. In every one of my courses as an undergrad we had to employ algebra extensively, culminating in a senior-level course in abstract algebra where we learned there are in fact more than just one algebra (the one we are all most familiar with), but actually very many and unique algebras. All that being said, I am 100% confident I can help iron out anyone's algebra wrinkles due to my long exposure and practice with basic and advanced algebra.

Calculus

Calculus

I have a great deal of experience in calculus. As requisites for my undergraduate degree, I have completed (with Straight A's) Calculus I-III, and Advanced Calculus I-II. I am currently in a Real Analysis course (graduate level Calculus). I also received a scholarship reward from the UNF Mathematics and Statistics department for "Excellence in Analysis (a.k.a. Calculus)".
Discrete Math

Discrete Math

Discrete math topics crop up all over the place. In addition to taking a class specifically in Discrete Mathematics at UNF as a part of my Undergrad (Passing with an A), I've dealt with discrete math in various areas such as in computer science applications (assessing algorithmic complexity, for example)and probability (specifically, combinatorics and counting). Discrete math topics also overlap with other mathematics courses that I've taken like Proof Theory, Number Theory, Graph Theory, and basic Logic. I feel confident due to my extensive exposure to Discrete Mathematics topics, that I can effectively tutor in the subject.
Precalculus

Precalculus

Without a solid foundation in precalculus, one would not be able to effectively tutor in calculus. Working as a collegiate level tutor at UNF, I tutored extensively in precalculus and calculus. I have a great deal of personal experience in calculus (and by extension, precalculus), as well. As requisites for my undergraduate degree, I have completed (with the highest marks) Calculus I-III, and Advanced Calculus I-II. I am also currently in a Real Analysis course (graduate level Calculus). I also received a scholarship reward from the UNF Mathematics and Statistics department for "Excellence in Analysis (a.k.a. Calculus)".

Awesome Help

Murphy was more than I could ask for in a tutor. Patient and understanding. I will be using him again. Calculus II is very difficult to understand and he broke it down in very small steps so I understood.

Professional and Dedicated Math Tutor

Being our first time to this website and using a tutor, I have to say I am impressed. Murphy is very professional, punctual and responsive. He truly has a passion for teaching and it shows. He has a great ability to connect with the student and sees it through to the end. He is flexible with his schedule and has always been able to accommodate us no matter how last minute. I highly recommend him to anyone looking for a math tutor.
