Hi, I'm Hong! I graduated from Stanford with Bachelor and Masters in Biology (GPA: 3.7 and 3.8 respectively), and I'm currently pursuing an MD/MBA from Virginia Tech Carilion SOM (MD: ongoing, MBA: 4.0). Along the way, I've conducted research published in Nature Immunology and The Dermatologist and coordinated clinical trials at Stanford School of Medicine.

One of my greatest strengths is tutoring and mentoring. I've worked with students from a wide range of educational backgrounds. In college, I mentored a middle school student from a first gen, low income background, and I guided / tutored younger classmates who have struggled with ADHD affecting their grades. My tutoring experience includes SAT/ACT prep and high school and college applications guidance, and my experience spans more than 6 years with a mix of both in person and remote. The past 2 years, I've tutored students in MCAT prep, which has been primarily remote and one-on-one, given the convenience for both my students and me.

Through my own MCAT journey (MCAT: 516, 94%ile), I've developed a strategic, high-yield approach that maximizes efficiency and performance. Success on the MCAT is about understanding how the AAMC designs questions, recognizing patterns, and applying the right reasoning strategies under time constraints. I teach my students, who range from undergraduates to post-graduates, how to break down CARS passages with precision, tackle the most challenging Bio/Biochem and Chem/Phys questions with confidence, and avoid common traps in Psych/Soc.

Beyond content mastery, I emphasize the importance of active learning techniques. I show you how to study smarter by focusing on the strategies that actually improve retention and test-day performance. Whether you need to boost a specific section or develop a comprehensive study plan, I provide the insight and mentorship needed to turn ambition into a top MCAT score.

Let's work together to ensure that you're not just prepared - but ahead. Looking forward to helping you reach your g

MCAT

My score is 516 (94% percentile). My strategy for the MCAT focuses on learning through practice questions and utilizing the incorrect answer choices to our advantage. The amount of tested information is manageable and therefore, it behooves you to know the pattern behind both incorrect and correct answers. This pattern recognition has to build upon existing content and thus content review is the first 30% of studying and practicing how it appears on the actual exam is the remaining 70%.
USMLE

USMLE

I passed my STEP 1 exam on the first attempt; my previous official, timed practice NBME exams all predicted 99% chance of passing (if taken within a week). As for my philosophy, I subscribe to the idea that the best way to learn this incredible amount of info is through practice questions and spaced repetition, but the key taught to me is to strategically incorporate the incorrect questions into the above practice. First Aid is fine for content review, but the main focus should be on UWorld and a spaced repetition software such as Anki. This strategy has been used by students at my school who have consistently scored at least 1 standard deviation above the national Step 1 mean score, back when it was numerically scored.
