About Margaret

Bio

I majored in English and minored in Education at Duke University, and fell in love with helping students one-on-one to achieve their goals. I enjoy getting to know my students and working with them long-term to figure out what they want to improve, figuring out a plan to get to that point, and then reaching the goal together. I started informally tutoring by helping classmates beginning in elementary school, and then moved on to formal tutoring in college.

Personally I enjoy reading and writing, and I always have a few books going. There's always something going on in Richmond, and I love discovering new parts of the city or a new-to-me-festival.

I have over a decade's experience in tutoring middle and high school students in English and writing, beginning as an Education minor in college. I love helping AP Language and AP Literature students with understanding how to write rhetorical analysis essays and other assignments. I'm comfortable helping high school students with all parts of English class, including writing papers, learning grammar, discussing literature, and mastering new vocabulary words. I love to work with high school students to improve their skills analyzing literature and writing papers. I specialize in academic/school-related writing, not creative writing.

I'm available for tutoring on an ongoing basis or as-needed basis.

I'd love to hear from you about your challenges, and work with you to make a plan to conquer them. Contact me to learn more about my background, have me answer any questions you have, and to schedule your first lesson today.

I welcome students of all backgrounds and identities. LGBT+ friendly.

Great for high schooler.

Since my kid started writing with Ms. E, she expended her vocabulary in writing, had no fear to write any topic, and improved research skills. Ms. E is knowledgeable and patient.

Knowledgable and insightful

With the help of my tutor, I delved into concepts that are imperative to know when writing a rhetorical analysis based on a text. Specifically, we examined the syntax and diction of the beginning of Martin Luther King Jr's "Letter From Birmingham Jail."

Patient and Skillful Teacher

I reached out to Margaret to get additional support on my Pre-AP English class, so far she has been great in understanding my need and supporting me where I need the most help. She is an incredible person - very patient and supportive.

Great teacher very knowledgeable

I needed help with my course of AP language and Composition, particularlyin the rhetorical analysis section, and I found that Margret was a great help in boosting my score. She really makes sure that her students understand the content that is provided and she has helped me not only develop better essays but learn the mindset needed to write these essays.

Very Helpful!

Margaret is helping my high school son with his college English class. She patient and kind as she has taken the time to walk him through the process of his writing assignments. He ends the sessions feeling motivated and more confident in his abilities. Thank you for helping reduce some of his stress!

My Daughter Got An "A"

Margaret was my daughters tutor for the spring semester 2020 in an English 112 class at Reynolds Community College. Margaret was very friendly and accommodating. Always available when we scheduled appointments. Very responsive when we texted and asked questions. My daughter got an “A” in the class and we were very happy. I would rate her at the highest level possible!!

Knows Her Stuff

Margaret made a subject that was very difficult for my son (senior in HS) very easy. She knew exactly the right questions to ask him that prompted the correct responses. She knew the material that they were studying. I would highly recommend Margaret as an English tutor.
