I have been a special education teacher for 10 years and have completed my Masters Degree in Elementary education and special education, specializing in learning disabilities. I am a current Richmond Public Schools exceptional education teacher, and have been teaching in Richmond for 8 years. For two years I was a New York City public school teacher. I have mostly worked in inclusive classrooms with students with learning disabilities, Autism, emotional disabilities, intellectual disabilities and ADD/ADHD. We work in small groups and one on one, in these settings I made sure all my students felt comfortable and left feeling confident rather than defeated. I believe that building confidence in students is vital for their success.

I was a teacher at an alternative day school for students with behavioral and emotional disabilities. My classroom was 6 students and I created lesson plans that were parallel to the Virginia Standards of Learning (SOL). Again, I made sure my students left feeling confident rather than defeated, and I made sure of that by choosing activities and lessons that they were able to engage, interact, and enjoy.

I have been trained in multiple, researched based phonics and reading programs. Many of these programs are made for students with dyslexia and other related learning disabilities. I also have training and experience working with students with ADD/ADHD and Autism. Through all my experiences in education I know one thing to be true, students need an advocate and I am that person for them. I am available for reading, science and social skills tutoring.

Approved Subjects

ADHD

ADHD

ADD/ADHD were one of the topics I was trained in learning best teaching practices during my Master's degree program. I also have 2 years experience working with students with ADD/ADHD as a middle school classroom teacher. I provided modifications for students such as extended breaks, tactile stimulants such as a stress ball or rubber band ball, and communication signals specific for each student.
Dyslexia

Dyslexia

My master's degree in special education specialized in learning disabilities, dyslexia is one of the most common learning disabilities therefore I have extensive knowledge and practice working with this population. Many of my students that I taught had dyslexia or some speech and language impairment. I have done research on best techniques and have written multiple papers on both dyslexia and dyscalculia.

Elementary (K-6th)

I have both New York and Virginia state teaching certifications in elementary (k-6) education. I obtained my master's degree in elementary education as well as elementary special education. I have worked with students in Kindergarten, 1st grade, 2nd grade, 3rd grade, and 6th grade.
Handwriting

Handwriting

I have completed training in the Handwriting Without Tears, a researched-based and highly used handwriting program for students of all ages. The program uses a combination of visual, auditory, and tactile activities to reach all students. My students have loved this program in the past and I have seen improvements every time.
Phonics

Phonics

Throughout my master's program I have learned many different research-based phonics programs such as the Orton-Gillingham program, the Wilson program, and using a variety of multi-sensory tools to develop and strengthen phonics. I taught K-2nd graders how to reach using a combination of these programs, and my own homemade tools and activities. I have helped 7th graders who struggle with reading increase their fluency and comprehension skills.
