I am a certified teacher (preschool - 4th grade) with 25 years experience working as a teacher and tutor. I have been working as a tutor with WyzAnt for more than 5 years and have worked as a tutor before then for several other years, both privately and in a school system. My students generally improve their grades by at 1 - 2 letter grades. I've taught students who had no interest in reading and no concept of how to read and turned them into truly curious learners. I had one student who couldn't read and didn't know her alphabet when we started, and was reading Harry Potter 2 years later! I have experience working with special needs students, as well those with various learning disabilities. I have many different ways of teaching material to students who are having difficulty, from games to new learning strategies to mnemonic devices. I'm very patient with my students and understand that change doesn't happen overnight, but it does happen! I've also been playing saxophone for over 40 years, play chess, and am mostly fluent in Spanish. Please contact me if you're seeking a true quality educator with excellent references for your PreK-6th grade student! Thank you!

The $40 an hour is for a 20 mile radius. I am willing to travel up to 30 miles one way, but rates for 21 - 30 miles distance would be an extra $5/hour.
Alyssa has been working with my daughter who is on the Autism Spectrum. While my daughter was resistant at first, Alyssa was very patient and found ways to engage my daughter. Learning is difficult for my daughter, so it took great patience, abilities and care for Alyssa to engage her and to continue to engage her from session to session. With Alyssa's assistance, my daughter has learned math skills that she would not have otherwise learned.
We truly enjoyed working with Alyssa. She was very patient and our child always looked forward to her lessons. Her feedback was very helpful in terms of how our child was progressing and what we should reinforce. Our child really made great strides. We are very happy we had the chance to work with Alyssa.
Alyssa provided very valuable information concerning our son that we are very grateful for that will allow us to help our son flourish into the outstanding young man that we know he can be. Alyssa worked well with our son and he responded well to her. However, based on her bio, I wished she could've been more helpful with our son's special needs.
Alyssa is helping my 6 year old patiently to improve his skills on reading and math. Alyssa is very professional and understood what is needed based on the assessment and started to tutor my son. So far so good, everything is coming all really well.
My pre-k daughter has been working with Alyssa for 4 weeks. Her teacher told me "whatever you are doing with her keep it up!" she has improved with her letter recognition and sound to letter correlation. we are so happy with her!
"Miss Alyssa" has been tutoring my second grader for about 3 months in reading and reading comprehension. I'm always impressed with how patient she is and that she uses her resources outside the time she's tutoring to help my daughter make progress. I can tell she is as interested in my daughter's success as we are. Alyssa is also flexible which, as a busy family, helps our schedule tremendously. My daughter enjoys her sessions and has gained confidence in her studies. She also benefits from the tips and techniques that Alyssa teaches her, to help her break words up and figure them out while she's reading. We look forward to working with her even more this year!
Alyssa has helped my daughter with 5th grade math and reading and is also willing to help with other subjects. My daughter's reading grade has improved one letter grade since she started tutoring. Alyssa has taught my daughter some math facts without requiring memorization, which is something she struggles with, so alternative learning techniques are very helpful. Alyssa is able to get a lot accomplished during a one hour session. When first talking to Alyssa, she responded quickly to email and worked with us to arrange a convenient schedule. My daughter enjoys her time with Alyssa and enjoys learning more at school now that she has extra help to understand the subjects.
Alyssa was prompt and friendly. She delivered a good hour long tutorial at a pace my son enjoyed. Definitely worth every penny! Thank you Alyssa.
Alyssa was right on target from the first session. She had a great "report" for us shortly thereafter with details of what our daughter did well and struggled with which confirmed what her teacher has shared with us as well. This made us feel more confident that Alyssa was the right tutor and that she would "get right to" what mattered to help us improve. Very anxious for the next sessions.
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

I have tutored and taught many students (preschool - 5th) in reading for over 20 years using phonics. Even adults use phonics to read, but do so at a much more rapid pace than early learners. Adults also use phonics to decode unfamiliar words. I teach students letter sounds, dipthongs, and so forth. I teach them to break the unfamiliar word up into parts they know. I teach students to read by putting together the sounds they've learned - slowly, at first, then more rapidly. This is how most school systems teaching reading, as well.
