I'm Mr. Connor, an experienced educator and former award-winning journalist who believes building relationships with students is the key to academic success. I've worked with students in first through eighth grade, including a stint as a classroom teacher for third and fourth graders. I taught all four core subjects and created a positive environment by encouraging students to take ownership over their education. I work hard to remind students that success in school allows them to take control of their futures and use in-class incentives to demonstrate how hard work can translate to real world rewards.
In addition to my work as a classroom teacher, I have three years of experience tutoring students in elementary and middle school mathematics. I believe a good lesson starts with allowing students to explore an introduction to the topic, encouraging them to think critically and activating prior knowledge they bring with them. Afterwards, I explicitly teach the material before allowing for individual practice. I use physical manipulatives and visual aids to ensure students understand the concepts covered before moving to repeated practice problems.
Prior to my career in education, I was a data journalist for my local NPR station, winning awards including Best Reporting on Economic Impacts on Local Communities from the Public Media Journalists Association. I graduated Summa Cum Laude from Virginia Tech with bachelors degrees in economics and journalism.
I would love to talk more about how I can support your student's academic success! Strong communication with students and their parents is essential, so I'm always happy to provide updates, answer questions, and hear feedback. Please contact me if you have any questions or would like to schedule a lesson online or in person. I look forward to meeting you and your young scholar!
