Hey, I'm John! I recently graduated summa cum laude from William & Mary with degrees in Mathematics and Chinese. I have over five years of experience tutoring math. Most of my experience is in teaching Calculus I & II, Multivariable Calculus, Linear Algebra, and a range of other undergraduate-level math courses. I primarily tutor high school students, college undergraduates, and adult learners.

One of the reasons I developed a passion for math is that I had instructors who took the time to break down difficult concepts and make them intuitive. This is what I focus on in my tutoring sessions. Instead of just having students memorize procedures, I help them understand how they could have come up with the method on their own. Focusing on deep understanding has helped my students improve their test scores, prepare for future math courses, and, most importantly, come to see math as something that is coherent, useful, and interesting.

Approved Subjects

ACT Math

ACT Math

I have several years of experience helping students succeed on the ACT Math section, working with students across a wide range of starting scores and skill levels. I help students build strong intuition for the underlying mathematical concepts while also learning how to recognize common problem types and apply the quickest strategy for each one. I also focus on avoiding the traps that make otherwise straightforward questions more difficult under time pressure. Several of my students have gone on to score high 30s on the Math section.
Algebra 1

Algebra 1

I have several years of experience tutoring the Algebra sequence at the middle & high school level. I’ve worked with students on topics ranging from foundational equations and functions to quadratics, polynomials, systems, and exponential models. My background in mathematics allows me to explain not just how to solve a problem, but why it makes sense.
Algebra 2

Algebra 2

I have several years of experience tutoring the Algebra sequence at the middle & high school level. I’ve worked with students on topics ranging from foundational equations and functions to quadratics, polynomials, systems of equations, and exponential models. My background in mathematics allows me to explain not just how to solve a problem, but why it makes sense.
Calculus

Calculus

I graduated summa cum laude from William & Mary with a degree in Mathematics and have been tutoring Calculus I, II, and III for over five years. I really enjoy teaching the calculus sequence because it’s often the first time students begin to see how seemingly separate topics in math are deeply connected. I focus on building strong intuition in my students - my goal is for students to understand the ideas well enough that the techniques feel like something they could have come up with themselves.
General Music

General Music

I have been DJ'ing part-time for many years and have hands-on experience setting up live music events. I've been running my own techno parties for quite some time, and am knowledgeable about signal flow, gain staging, and how the technical side of audio actually affects what people hear. My goal is to help beginners understand the setup clearly and discover how they can express themselves on the decks.
Linear Algebra

Linear Algebra

I have several years of experience tutoring Linear Algebra at the undergraduate level. My background in proof-based mathematics allows me to help students with both the computational and theoretical sides of the subject. I focus on helping students understand Linear Algebra in a highly visual and geometric way.
Linux

Linux

I use the Linux terminal all day, every day for programming, coursework, and technical projects. Over time, Linux has become my main environment for writing code, managing files, working with remote machines, and solving practical computer problems. I help students understand Linux in a hands-on way, with an emphasis on building real fluency rather than memorizing commands. My goal is to make students comfortable using Linux as a practical tool for programming, school, and technical work.
Prealgebra

Prealgebra

have several years of experience tutoring Pre-algebra. I take the time to help students build real intuition so they understand why each method works instead of simply memorizing steps. My goal is to help students become more confident problem-solvers while building the foundation they need for Algebra I and future math classes.
Precalculus

Precalculus

I have several years of experience tutoring Precalculus. I especially enjoy the subject because it is often where different areas of math begin to come together. I take the time to help students understand what the formulas and graphs are really saying rather than treating each problem as another trick to memorize. My goal is to make students feel confident and ready for Calculus and beyond.
Probability

Probability

I have several years of experience tutoring probability at both the high school and undergraduate levels. I concentrated on mathematical statistics & stochastic modeling while doing my degree in mathematics and am currently pursuing a career in Operations Research.
SAT Math

SAT Math

I have several years of experience helping students succeed on the SAT Math section, working with students across a wide range of starting scores and skill levels. I help students build strong intuition for the underlying mathematical concepts while also learning how to recognize common problem types and apply the quickest strategy for each one. I also focus on avoiding the traps that make otherwise straightforward questions more difficult under time pressure. Several of my students have gone on to score 750+ on the Math section.
Trigonometry

Trigonometry

I have several years of experience tutoring geometry at the middle school and high school levels. I focus on helping students build a strong visual understanding of geometric relationships, especially as they begin connecting geometry to trigonometry. I help students see why the trigonometry facts they learn in school are actually very intuitive, so they can understand them rather than simply memorize them.

fantastic!

Wow! We weren't sure what to expect, but John was on time, polite, professional, and got straight to the heart of many of our daughter's pain points. After he left she was visibly energized and said, "I can do math now!" This might sound fake, but it's what actually happened! She's just needs someone to patiently explain the areas where she has comprehension gaps. He instantly put her (age 15) at ease and she felt completely comfortable asking questions that I know sometimes she might have been self conscious about. Thank you, John! We look forward to next time!
