Hi, I'm Emily! I am a Ph.D. student at Virginia Commonwealth University, and while working toward my goal of becoming a professor, I want to strengthen my skills and continue my passion of teaching through tutoring! Teaching has been a central focus of my life through multiple jobs, hobbies, and interests, and I am excited to continue this work through tutoring.

I was a tutor at Mathnasium for 4 years through high school and early college, and I continued to be a private math tutor (in-person and virtually) for 2 additional years. I tutored children anywhere from kindergarten to 10th grade, but most of my students were around 3rd-8th grade. During my undergraduate education, I worked as a writing tutor in my university's writing center and worked with undergraduate students. I eventually earned my Bachelor of Science from Christopher Newport University in Psychology with a minor in Writing. I then earned my Master of Science from Arizona State University where I worked as a teaching assistant for undergraduate and graduate level courses. Now I work as a graduate teaching assistant at Virginia Commonwealth University teaching Psychology Statistics to undergraduate students. I meet students where they are, focus on their strengths, and provide a supportive and fun learning environment for students to succeed. I am easy to reach about scheduling lessons and if you have any further questions or are interested, please reach out!

Elementary Math

I worked at Mathnasium for 3 years where I tutored children in math from kindergarten through high school, although most of my students ranged from 1st to 6th grade. After Mathnasium, I also worked as a private tutor teaching K-6 children math in person and online. I met students where they were, helped address their points of confusion, and made learning and engaging and fun activity, reinforcing their passion for learning.
Grammar

Grammar

I worked in my university's writing center as a writing tutor for 2 years. In this job, I helped students proofread and edit their work, teach grammatical skills, and enhance the flow and grammatical elements of their writing. I also passed a writing teaching course as a prerequisite to working in the writing center, and this course counted towards my minor in Writing.
Psychology

Psychology

I earned my Bachelor of Science in Psychology from Christopher Newport University where I was a part of a research lab conducting cognitive psychology research. I was also a research assistant for a psychology lab at Stanford University for a year. Now I am getting my Ph.D. in Social Psychology at Virginia Commonwealth University. I am very passionate about psychology and my ultimate goal is to become a professor. My years of tutoring experience can help me effectively teach psychology to a wide range of ages.
Writing

Writing

I worked in my university's writing center as a writing tutor for 2 years. In this job, I helped students proofread and edit their work, brainstorm ideas, and enhance the flow and grammar in their writing. I also passed a writing teaching course as a prerequisite to working in the writing center, and this course counted towards my minor in Writing. My goal was to show students how enjoyable writing can be by meeting them where they were at, helping them find their own writing voice, and strengthening their skills to make writing an empowering experience.
