Hi, I'm Ava! I graduated from the University of Virginia with degrees in English and Spanish. I love working with students to not only help them succeed, but also help them build confidence and skills they can take with them far beyond an exam or standardized test. When I was in school, I struggled a lot when it came to rote memorization and always was more interested in the why or the how of an answer, and I carry that with me as a tutor. I try to help students truly understand conceptual foundations and prefer lessons to be a mix of fun, hands-on activities that encourage active participation. I also provide students with time to work through the material on their own, as I believe that learning from your own mistakes is the best way to improve.
I have over three years of tutoring experience with a variety of ages and subjects. I currently work part-time at a bilingual school as an English teacher for students ages 12-18. I also tutor adult students in English classes. Previously, I worked one-on-one with an elementary student for two years in English, reading, and science classes, and tutored small groups of elementary students on reading and grammar. I've also worked with high school students, helping them edit essays, draft college applications, and prepare for standardized tests including the SAT and ACT. In college I edited academic essays and reviewed creative writing assignments.
I look forward to working with a variety of students and helping them not only improve their performance but deepen their understanding of topics and hopefully inspire a love of learning. I want my lessons to be fun and comfortable, and encourage students and parents to make suggestions that work for them. I look forward to hearing from you!
