Hi! I am a medical student with a passion for mentorship and education who has a bachelors in Chemistry and almost 10 years of experience in private tutoring/teaching. My first job at 14 was working at a local tutoring company where I had been a student, mostly to elementary school kids and young adults (ages 5-18). In my experience as a student and a tutor, studying was a chore, even a checkbox that I had to write off to go and have real fun. That is why I believe deeply in the difference between studying, and learning. Learning stimulates curiosity, and I became dedicated to finding ways to present science and math to elicit curiosity. I found that my young students at my first job responded well to this approach and became life-long learners rather than using studying to get through school.
In college, I applied my curiosity to study Chemistry at university. My curiosity and work resulted in me becoming a teaching assistant (TA) for organic chemistry. As a TA, I was involved in exam design and educational research. My teaching style reflects this, as I focus on understanding concepts and principles by focusing on application. My experience taught me how professors and educators design the best test questions, and how I can mentor students in not just understanding material, but how to demonstrate that competence on an exam. In addition, I accumulated experience doing freelance tutoring in Chemistry, Math, and Physics at the college level. My students have gone on to a variety of careers and schools at top institutions/graduate schools, where they continue to learn.
Outside of the sciences, I volunteer to teach English to adult non-native speakers through English as a Second Language organization (ESL). This has refined my communication skills and has made me fortunate to have experience teaching students with a wide variety of backgrounds and varying abilities. I hope that my experience and teaching philosophy can help you become the best version of a student you can be, and one day, a mentor.
