After serving in the military for nearly 10 years, I decided to go back to school and finish my degree. I pursued a degree in my biggest passion. I graduated in 2013 with a degree History and minor in English from Old Dominion University. During my tenure there, I tutored foreign exchange students in American history while also working as tutor in the university Writing Center. I also had the opportunity to work as a peer mentor, assisting History and Biology students with their writing and research. I love tutoring because it's a way to interact with people and help them grow intellectually. Educational settings can sometimes be intimidating; tutoring removes the pressure and allows for more effective learning. Tutoring is about empowerment and finding the right strategy to help someone learn.
I am adept at teaching how to brainstorm, form theses, perform research (and cite sources in a variety of styles -- MLA, Chicago, Turabian, APA, etc.), organize papers, edit/proofread, and use effective grammar/sentence structure. I can teach tips and tricks to make writing more sophisticated and elevated. I've tutored Biology students, foreign exchange students, and other students who find writing challenging or intimidating. Everyone can be an effective writer.
In college, I concentrated on early Roman, Medieval, and American history. Most people find history boring, but I find ways to make it interesting. I've tutored foreign exchange students in American history and enabled them to be successful on their exams and essays. Government and politics is a passion of mine. I have a Master's degree in Public Administration from George Mason University. My passion for understanding how government works and the complexities of American politics only grew, and sharing that interest in the American governmental system is something I love to do.
