I’m an experienced educator with a lifelong passion for problem-solving and a family background in teaching. Over the years, I’ve developed a strong track record of helping students build understanding, confidence, and academic skills in math and science. I’m an experienced educator with a lifelong passion for problem-solving and a family background in teaching. Over the years, I’ve developed a strong track record of helping students build understanding, confidence, and academic skills in math and science. My tutoring career began at Mathnasium of Arlington from 2013 to 2015, where I worked with students across a wide range of ability levels. From 2019 to 2022, I taught math and SAT prep at C2 Education, supporting middle school and high school students and helping them connect abstract concepts to real-world applications.

In 2017, I participated in the NASA DEVELOP program, collaborating with scientists at NASA Langley and NASA Goddard on interdisciplinary research projects. This experience strengthened my analytical thinking and problem-solving skills which I apply in my teaching. Since 2023, I have worked full-time as a Senior Instructor in McLean, VA, tutoring students in math, science, and standardized test preparation.

I am currently pursuing a PhD in Earth Systems and Geoinformation Sciences at George Mason University to continue the type of work I completed within the NASA DEVELOP program. My teaching approach emphasizes clear explanations, step-by-step reasoning, and tailoring lessons to each student’s goals. Whenever possible, I like to communicate with both students and parents before beginning lessons so I can prepare instruction that is effective from the very first session.

I tend to focus on physics and math but since different schools go over the material at different rates and order, please let me know what level of physics (regular, honors, AP1, AP2, APC, APEM) you are taking and where your class is at. For math, I have taught from K-8 as well as PreAlgebra to Differential Equations. Please note that my availability may be somewhat limited due to my full-time professional role in addition to my doctoral studies, but I’m happy to discuss scheduling to determine whether we’re a good fit.

ACT Math

ACT Math

After scoring well in the ACT myself I have studied the test's mechanics and topics to help students get an edge and understand what is expected of them to do well. I generally have students take a practice test and then analyze their strengths and weaknesses since each student is unique.
ACT Science

Algebra 1

Algebra 1

Since August 2013, I have worked with hundreds of students in algebra topics whether they are taking Algebra 1 or later math subjects since a lot of higher math is contingent on the knowledge from Algebra 1. Overall I have worked with ~300 students in total over the years.
Algebra 2

Algebra 2

Since 2013, I have worked with students in a variety of math subjects with Algebra 2 being the most common subject. The usage of Algebra 2 is in standardized testing as well as virtually every high school student I have worked with over the years.
AMC (Competition math)

AMC (Competition math)

Since 2019 I have worked with students in preparation for the AMC 8 and since 2023 I have worked with students for both the AMC 10 and 12. I have also aided students for the CEMC and the AIME.
Calculus

Calculus

Since 2013, I have worked with calculus students for AB Calculus, BC Calculus, and Multivariable Calculus. Students I have worked with have been high school, college-level, or adult students looking to get ahead or catch up.
Environmental Science

Environmental Science

My bachelor's degree is in environmental studies with a focus on energy. My masters thesis was looking at the energy profile for Malaysia to anticipate what energy policy they would utilize.
Geometry

Geometry

I worked with dozens of Geometry students while working at a math learning center and several students recently since moving to private tutoring. Each student has grown confidence in the material and their grades have reflected that confidence.
Physics

Physics

My last job outside of private tutoring was at a learning center where the most common request I received was helping students with physics. Specifically I have worked the most with AP Physics 1 and AP Physics C students but have also aided non-AP physics students and occasionally AP Physics EM and AP Physics 2. I have also worked with IB students in parallel courses to AP level courses.
Prealgebra

Prealgebra

For both the 2013/14 and 2014/15 school years I was a math instructor for students ranging from kindergarten to precalculus by showing them different methods of how to learn and solve different problems shown in class.

SAT Math

SAT Math

In high school I did very well in the SAT Math regular test and the SAT Math subject test. I have also aided my younger siblings and cousins with their tests and have worked with students while I worked at a math center for the 2013/14 and 2014/15 school years.

Great Tutor and very friendly

Douglas is very responsive and accommodating. He comes prepared with note sheets and resources to take home for practice. His understanding of the subject material, particularly in Calculus, which I was taking, is very impressive. He knows how to make it make sense and gives you tips and tricks on approaching the problems. Also, he is very friendly and is fun to chat with.

Great tutor

Douglas gave our two boys improved confidence after one session. They were excited to share what they learned. Douglas does a great job getting to know the students strengths and weaknesses quickly. We will definitely use him again.

Effective!

Douglas is working with my son on Algebra 2. My son got a great score on his first quiz since they began working together. My son feels like he is getting very effective help and the first score indicates that as well.

Great tutor

Doug was very helpful today for the first lesson. He explained key points in a different manner than my child’s teacher, breaking down material into easier to understand concepts.

Nancy, 1 lesson with Douglas

Very helpful tutor

After just one session my son is already feeling better about algebra 2. Douglas helped him understand conocepts in a way that makes much more sense. We will have more sessions not only to catch up, but maybe even to get ahead, since my son likes the way Doug explains things.
