I started piano lessons at age five and was in my first band at age 13. After picking up guitar, I studied and learned everything I could about music. Tutoring is an opportunity for me to help others with my abilities in Mathematics and Education. I recieved a B.S. in Mathematics from George Mason University in 1997, and I have been tutoring in Math since 2008. If you have a desire to learn and a willingness to put in a little effort, I know we can work together and acheive your mathematical goals.

AWS

AWS

I've built and supported a complete Windows based application in AWS using Terraform for infrastructure as code. I'm experienced in many of the primary service categories in AWS, including EC2, S3, VPC, CloudFront, CloudWatch, RDS, Lightsail, DynamoDB, Aurora, and others.
Calculus

Calculus

I have a Bachelor of Science degree in Pure Mathematics from George Mason University. As part of my degree, I studied advanced multivariable calculus, advanced linear algebra, abstract algebra, discrete math, and differential equations. I also studied and used advanced techniques for mathematical proofs, logic, set theory, and topology. Since then, I've tutored many students at all levels of mathematics, from third grade through college. I've helped struggling students turn things around and also helped advanced push through to new levels of understanding. Together, we can achieve any mathematical goal.
Composition (Music)

Composition (Music)

I've composed several orchestral, electronic, and rock/pop pieces. I've also collaborated with others to compose three short musicals and many rock, pop, punk, and musical theatre songs. I have extensive experience with all aspects of composition, including idea generation and development, structure and genre, lyrical prosody, effective arrangement and/or orchestration, orchestral mockups, recording and production, MIDI programming, synth programming, score engraving, parts preparation, copyright registration, etc. I can help with every step of the composition process.
Discrete Math

Discrete Math

Discrete Math and Abstract Algebra were both graduation requirements for my degree in Mathematics from GMU. We covered a broad range of topics from basic combinatorics through generating functions. I completed the Discrete Math requirement with a B grade overall and was able to put the coursework to use right away in discrete probability.
Ear Training

Ear Training

In addition to decades of experience transcribing music, learning music by ear, and improvising by ear, I recently completed two semesters of university Aural Skills courses, complete with sight-singing juries, and earned an A and B+. I also have experience teaching aural skills with the Fairfax County Department of Parks and Recreation. I can teach a complete, guided, and progressive curriculum including interval and chord recognition, melodic and harmonic dictation, and sight singing.
General Music

General Music

I've completed the first year of a music degree and made the Dean's List both semesters. I've written songs and performed with several rock bands, played in a university symphonic band, sung in a university chorale, studied music theory, acoustics, electronics, composition, songwriting, lyric writing, and practiced and performed on several different musical instruments.
Geometry

Geometry

Geometry is the subject that more students have requested my help in than any other. Many students who are comfortable with Algebra are challenged by Geometry, while many who struggle in Algebra find Geometry more to their liking. For everyone, it can be a challenge, especially when proofs are involved. Since proofs are at the heart of Mathematics, I welcome the challenge of tutoring Geometry. I've worked with many students in both Fairfax County and private school Geometry curricula, and I've developed methods to teach proofs for which there is little time in the classroom. I'm sure I can help any student understand this challenging and rewarding subject.
Guitar

Guitar

I have been a guitar player for 30 years, most of that time I have been active in bands and other musical groups. I'm currently enrolled at George Mason University to earn a degree in music composition. I have performed as a guitarist in two musicals and several smaller shows.
Information Technology

Information Technology

I worked in Information Technology for 25 years in various roles including help desk support tiers I through III, service manager, network engineer, and systems administrator. I have extensive experience with Microsoft Windows servers and workstations, along with most Microsoft software and SaaS offerings. I've built and migrated multi-server environments on premises and in both Azure and AWS. I also have extensive experience with Cisco routers, switches, and security appliances.
Music Production

Music Production

I've worked with bands to record and mix songs, EPs, albums and live shows, across many genres. I've also mixed live sound both as an on-call engineer for local venues and through my own live sound company. Whether you want to learn how to produce recordings or live shows for yourself or you want to learn to produce for others, I can teach or tutor you in all aspects of music production. Arrangements, orchestration, synth programming, amp settings, mic placement, gain staging, EQ, compression, all kinds of effects, pre-mastering, and delivery in different formats for streaming or other mediums.
Music Theory

Music Theory

I'm currently pursuing a degree in Music Composition at George Mason University and have passed or tested out of two years of undergraduate music theory. I have expertise in all of the fundamentals of music theory, such as scales, chords, modes, key and time signatures, cadences, and voice leading. I also have expertise in more advanced topics, including counterpoint, chromaticism, secondary dominants, augmented and Neapolitan sixth chords, phrases, periods, sentences, and larger forms like sonata, rondo, and fugue. I also have related skills in ear training and sight-singing, orchestration and arranging, and composition. In addition to my training in European common practice music theory, I have experience with non-European (East Asian, African, and Carnatic), atonal, modern, jazz, rock, and pop theories.
Piano

Piano

I started piano lessons at age 6 and eventually studied under a graduate of the Moscow Conservatory. I earned an A in the highest level Keyboard Skills class at George Mason University, and have taught piano to students of various levels. I've been a pianist for over 40 years.

Great Live Sound Engineering

I wanted to make my rock band rehearsal studio sound its best. We had excellent mixing and monitoring equipment but our small cement block basement was not a good room for a 5-piece band. Todd started teaching the basics of room accoustics, then gain structure and mixer equalization for maximum gain before feedback. In just the first hour, he presented ideas that resonated as definite ah-ha moments that helped explain some issues we were having with our system and our room. Todd's real world experience allowed him to quickly hone in on what to teach and in what order. He'll be my go-to for all my live sound and production tutoring.

Knowledgeable and patient in Music Theory

Todd has done a wonderful job getting my son up to speed in his music theory class. Being that he joined in the middle of the year it’s been a little difficult to catch up but Todd has made a tremendous difference.

very knowledgeable

we worked on timing chord changes and strumming tempos. this was only our first lesson and difficult to rate on a scale of 1-5. we'll know more as the lessons progress.

Incredible Logic Pro instructor

Todd is helping me with Logic Pro and principles of sound engineering. he does an excellent job of listening to his student's questions and wrapping that content into the overall picture of the topic being covered. Very knowledgeable, easy to talk to, and gives good insight into "homework" that can be done between lessons to enhance the experience

Todd is a Great tutor and always learn a lot. Will be gladly happy if Wyzant would allow to download the lessons as for now is not possible! Sometimes there are technical problems that would be great to be solved before the lesson in other to save time! Wonderful Tutor would recommend him to anyone interested in music and music production!

Great fit for my daughter.

Todd is great at keeping my daughter confident about math and engaged. Especially when working on really tough problems and concepts. He also has mini breaks where they talk about anything that pops up like current events, goals, school events, etc.

Wonderful teacher

My son has been taking guitar lessons from Todd for 8 months now, and we couldn't be happier with his progress. Todd is very patient and always responds positively to my son's questions. He is very easy to communicate with, and very reliable. My son has learned an incredible amount in a very short time, and his guitar lesson is the highlight of his week. I highly recommend Todd.
